I'm sure that everyone knows that Loren Pope, soon to turn 95 this summer, will be publishing the newest revision of his highly regarded book. But, does anyone know what the newest addition to his existing list of 40 colleges is??

I wonder if he is going to remove Reed, it has gotten much more press lately including being highlighted in the US NEWS college guide and is more selective than it was a few years ago- he seems to have removed schools when their profile is raised- or have you seen that he was expanding the list?

On the Beloit website, the president's remarks indicate that in July 2006 a new volume will be published and that there will be 41 CTCLs...but no indication of whether it's the original 40 + 1 or some other configuration.

hmmmmmm...... publishing date July 25 2006

Colleges That Change Lives : 41 Schools That Will Change the Way You Think about College

That's a good way to distinguish the new edition from old. I also am very curious to see what the 41 colleges are (I expect a few will be dropped from the old edition)

I bet he changed the title to let people know he actually updated teh book
he has had 2 or 3 previous editions which are pretty similar but not exactly
But the same can be said for many other books on colleges, if you took 10 colleges and read the various editions that come out every year or so, the same quotes are often used
So I would prefer that he keep all the colleges and just add to them, because it isn't like he brings to light schools that are in the public eye all the time anyway-

Interesting tidbit
Loren Pope had Frank Lloyd Wright design his house

NJREs I had the same thought. It might be like the Princeton Review book where it's not just adding one, it's subtracting several and adding several. BUT, I doubt that will happen now that CTCL is also a website and joint marketing organization www.ctcl.com . How would they vote one of the current members off the island?

It appears to be New College of Florida. If you go to the CTCL website, the New College is listed in the sidebar -- and there are now 41 schools. Oddly, New College is not on the map of the schools.

PS, it does not appear that any of the original 40 have been dropped.

makes me wonder what's # 42-50+!

i too am very interested to see what schools made the cut. my bet is that at least five schools have been dropped. the book was first published in 1996, the updated in 2000. but some of the information was still dated. in the antioch chapter he spoke about his visit thirty years ago. also the subtitle change makes me believe that a significant portion will be different. guess we will all have to wait until july!

also www.ctcl.com is not endorsed by loren pope i dont believe, though new colleges edition to their list could be a sign.

amazon.com has the new book listed as 40 colleges, not 41

I went to one of the CTCL college fair for high schoolers, and the question about the 41st college arose. Yes, New College of Florida is the newest college on the list, and none of the other schools have been cut, despite the fact that Reed is becoming more popular.

We visited New College of Florida in February and the admissions folks said that it was the 41st school. Apparently Pope added NCF and didn't drop any of the exisiting 40 schools.

My son and I visited his chosen college today. A staff member in admissions said that there will still be only 40 CTCL colleges. Apparently while New College of Florida was added, an existing CTCL school was dropped. I wonder which it is.........stay tuned.
