What's the advantage?

What's the advantage of going to all an girls' school? I've been told to apply here, but I'm not sure about the all-girl environment. What's it like? What are the perks? Any disadvantages? Let me know :)

I sometimes wonder if I would have ended up majoring in Neuroscience had I gone to a co-ed school. In high school I was a self-proclaimed student of humanities and avoided science like the plague, but somehow I got sucked in from a Psychology route to a Neuroscience route. As somebody who barely took science classes before Wellesley, it’s a little intimidating to be starting in college. It’s hard, but the professors are amazing, supportive, and it’s easy to get the help/attention I need.

I realized that going to a college for women has really helped me feel more comfortable throughout this process. The fact is that science is a male-dominated arena. Studies show that a lot of times males tend to dominate the classrooms as well. It’s not their fault, but it also shows that fundamentally females are different. I never noticed it until I went to a college for women and was able to compare it to my male friends at MIT. I’ve been able to notice how young women, my friends, hesitate compared to their male counterparts, whether it comes down to asking questions in the classroom, applying to a tough-to-get internship, accepting a difficult job, or even asking for a pay raise (I could go into this issue, too, but that’s another story). Women tend to feel that they are not worthy, not good enough, while males have always been taught to just dive in.

I noticed this lack of confidence in myself when I started attending Wellesley. Wellesley has helped me realize that I was actually the main obstacle preventing myself from accomplishing everything I could. So I told myself to shut up, applied to major in Neuroscience, and applied for several internships/jobs (which I got ;))

Other perks:
-Clean, quiet dorms
-Having the boyfriend off campus = less distractions for when I’m ready to work.
-Food. Wellesley just has a lot of awesome food. Guys, however, tend to eat everything in sight. When they’re out of the picture, there’s more for us ladies ;)
