What's the best place in the northwest for an engineer?

What schools in the Pacific Northwest should I look into (OOS)?

(I need scholarship $...)

UW is probably the best engineering school in the PNW. After that I would look at WSU, OSU, and U of I.

I’d also like to add that WSU and U of I are both out in the middle of nowhere. OSU, while in a pretty small town itself (Corvallis), is only an hour from Portland.

All of these schools are going to cost you big-time, for non-resident tuition. Great high school grades and test scores may help you get SOME scholarship money, but be prepared for sticker-shock when you receive your Financial Aid award (or lack thereof) from a public university other than one located in your own state.

Your best bet is to find an engineering school that has a great career placement office which can help you with summer employment and an eventual job upon graduation. Boeing, for example, recruits at schools across the nation, not just in the Pacific Northwest. Makes sense, since Boeing has facilities in several states.

If your dead-set on matriculating in the northwest, consider the private [Catholic] U of Portland in addition to the public universities. I have no specific experience with UP, but some report that UP’s financial aid packages are competitive. Equally Catholic U of San Diego allegedlly gives good financial aid, but the undergraduate engineering program at USD is a 5-year program.

Do you have a decent in-state public option? That can be like getting $10K right off the bat. Sometimes dreams (like living in the PNW) have to wait a while for practical reasons. That aside, I would also recommend UW.

You will not get scholarships at UDub.

Idaho is a pretty good school, and it does have some scholarships. Same goes for WSU. If you are a National Merit Finalist, both of these will give you a very generous package.

Oregon State doesn’t have much merit aid.

If you are willing to look at the mountain west as well, I’d check out Montana State and U Wyoming.
