Does anyone have a sense on how the number of applicants this year compare to last? Overall admissions up, down, by how much? Up only at certain schools? What kind of effect is the economy having in the boarding school world this year?

Seems about the same at the HADES schools–maybe up or down a percentage point. My sense is that the “second string” schools have made it to the 1st string this year, at least as far as applicants and admit. rates go. We’ll see how it pans out…

Hotchkiss: 1900 applications, 16% admit rate.

I feel like applications went up. I know that PA had an increase in applications, but the same admit rate as last year at 14%. I think 3,100 applications, 446 students admitted.

I thought that, because of the economy, parents would be more prudent about costs of education. I suppose not!

Yes, I’ve heard the argument both ways. People paring back expenses and/or less able to foot the bill in this economy. And the contrary - the public schools are hurting so much, more people are looking at private schools, including boarding schools.

Great kids whose parents worry about their future. More applicants throwing in the towel with public schools budget cuts and threats of more. FA budgets at BSbeing pushed to the max.

Choate had record applicants this yr. 1900 and a 20% acceptance.

Groton’s AO office said they had an exceptionally high number of applications but I don’t know exact numbers

Deerfield had a record number of applications (2200) and an admit rate of 13.5%.
