D2 is a rising senior, and like to join her sister in williams ('16). She is struggling to make decision if apply williams ED. Her brief stats:
1) GPA Uw 4.12 ( school only publish UW, kind like average A-)
2) SAT I: Single 2280 (CR: 770, M: 740, W: 770), super (2 sittings) 2310 (CR: 790, M: 750, W: 770),
3) ACT: 35 (English 36, Math 35, Science 36, Read/Write 32)
4) SAT II: Math II, 770, Chemistry 730, Chinese with Listening 790,
5) APs: Chemistry 5, Physics 3, Computer Science, Cals BC, English are waiting for results, and she takes almost all AP classes in senior year.

Other facts:
1) Volleyball team: freshmen, JV, Varsity, Varsity.
2) Vollunteer: teaching lower income kids 3 years.
3) She should be a NMS ( with PSAT 240).
4) State NJ, Asian female.

On one hand, ED will increase her chance, on the other hand, Williams is a high reach for her, might waste the ED for a school she has the better chance. Any suggestions?

Your D looks like a strong candidate for Williams. Not only are her standardized testing scores in the range for Williams, the sister advantage will also help her. My only concern would be her ECAs. Volleyball and teaching looks strong and shows commitment but perhaps she is kind of lacking in the awards/achievements section. In any case, I would suggest she ED to Williams. Good luck to her!

Thanks for quick response!
Yes, ECAs are definitely short. And her all scores (except PSAT) are lower than her sister, that’s a factor she is not strong willing to go to williams.

I agree that Williams likes siblings. We even got a letter from Adam Falk about how he was happy our daughter was following her sibling to Williams. Her SAT scores were similar to your daughter’s in total (but she did have 2 800s in CR and W), also NM Finalist, slightly higher SAT 2s. I think they will like the teaching as there is a program where students volunteer at Williamstown Elementary.

I don’t think applying ED would be a waste at all. If your D has no other dream school or number one choice beating Williams, I would encourage her to go early for Williams.

By the way the average SAT score at Williams is 2180, so I am not sure why you say Williams is a high reach for your daughter?

Thanks for suggestions!

SAT average doesn’t tell much. In last 5 years, our high school had total of 13 students applied, only my D1 was accepted in 2012. The average SAT of those 13 students was in 2300 level. We booked on campus info session for application in Aug. Hopefully she can make decision after that.

required, I wouldn’t worry so much about your daughter’s SAT scores. They’re fine and won’t be the deciding factor. Being a sibling is a plus, being Asian is a plus, volleyball is a plus.

Volunteer teaching is a definite plus, how much so depends on her level of involvement. This is an EC that could be expanded and enhanced and offers good opportunities for essay topics, additional recommendations. As mentioned above, Williams like this kind of commitment to education.

I believe that applying ED would also be a plus. If Williams is her #1 choice, she should make a decision to go for it.

I don’t really see any negatives, except, perhaps, a lack of non-academic focus. I.e., what does she like to do outside of class? What did she do over the summer? What will she bring to the campus community?

She needs to zoom in on how she will present herself in her application – her essays, her recommendations, resumes and supplements. LACs like Williams look at applicants holistically, so she needs to think about how to present herself in three dimensions.

Very informative reply, thanks!
She spent almost all the summers (every summer) on the volleyball (beach volleyball) tournaments/camps. Tried to apply for some reseach camps this summer, didn’t get in.
Anyway, will let pass her your good suggestions.
