So half of the finalists are given a $2500 scholarship, but are they randomly chosen? Or is it based on PSAT score, SAT score, essays, etc?

There are 2500 scholarships of $2500, at least for last year, so it is only about 1/6 that get this scholarship.

No, it is not randomly given, it is based on PSAT scores and your application and it is state proportionate i.e. every state gets to have some winners and this number is based on the number of eligible HS students in that state.

There was a posting on this forum recently where the OP had heard a rumor that the NMSC is going through some financial problems and they may cut down on the number of scholarships and/or the amount. That has not been verified as far as I know, but it entirely plausible.

Maze is right.

Some say that those who get NMF scholarships from corporations or colleges, are less likely to be considered for the one time scholarship because each student can only receive one “official” NMF scholarship and usually the college or corporate scholarship is larger.

Your question is…What’s the criteria for being selected for a NM Scholarship?

Technically, a student can control whether or not he gets a NM Scholarship. There are 3 types of NM Scholarships …
- From NMCorp, 2) From a college 3) From a corporation.

So, if you choose to take a college-offered NMF scholarship then you get to determine that you’re a NM Scholar. Anyone who gets a NMF scholarship from one of those 3 sources is a NM Scholar.
