My son just got an invitation to this, saying he was nominated by a staff member at his high school. I’m skeptical based on earlier threads. Really not prepared to spend thousands to spend him to yet another summer program (he has already done CTY and Brown); rather, the plan was for him to take an EMS course and maybe get a part-time job this year. Should we even think about NSLC? Thanks.
NSLC is legit in the sense that you pay money and there is a program that you go to. You listen to lectures and do activities etc. My daughter did Junior National Student Leadership Conference in 7th grade and had a great time. However, I don’t think that it is worth anything much in the admissions game. He should take an EMS course and get a part time job.
Most of us have ever been able to trace this marketing mail to any teacher or advisor who had nominated. Plenty of parents have said their kids’ grades and status didn’t really make them so special to be singled out in this way. And no, it’s not cheap.
It’s pay-to-play. Adcoms know that. But, I know plenty of kids who did one (medical and govt-related) and enjoyed it. One got aid from them to pay for it. EMS and a job may be the better use of time. They would be a shift away from academic programs, a new sort of challenge and responsibility. Best wishes.
Those teacher or school “recommendations” are names of Honor roll students bought and paid for. How does Who’s Who or NSHSS get kids’ names? They buy the lists.
My kid did a NSLC conference the summer after 10th grade. She loved it…and it was a good experience for her. Yes, pricey…but so was the summer camp we sent her to for many years. It was two weeks.
With regard to EMT courses…they are offere on a variety of schedules. It is very possible a kid could do a summer program for a week or two and also complete an EMT course in the summer.
