" Clemson is regarded as a richer, preppier private school"

Clemson is a PUBLIC school.

Clemson is a PUBLIC school.

I meant to apply to SUNY New Paltz, but all I could remember when I was addressing envelopes for teacher recommendations was that it had a P in it somewhere. So I applied to SUNY Purchase. Oops.

hmm i only apply to schools if they pass the “rule of five”. basically, i have to go on wikipedia and check the alumni list. there have to be at least five people i’ve heard of on there or else i deem the school too obscure to apply to.

I know a student who transferred to Brown because Emma Watson goes there.

^LAWL. Not even THAT surprised. She’s a HUGE icon!

Notre Dame-Even though it’s not high on my list, I applied only because it’s a prestigious, household name, and I thought they would consider me a good fit because I’m a devout Catholic. Turns out I was right…I got in
Boston College-I’m applying mainly because there are no supplementary essays…
Wash U-^Kinda the same reason
UMass Amherst-Not applying because I know wayyyyyyyy too many people there and I want a school where I know almost NO ONE.
UC Schools-I didn’t apply because over 90% of the students there are in-state so I thought I would feel out of place.
Wake Forest-After ONE visit, I just had a gut feeling that it wasn’t what I wanted, so I didn’t apply. I thought it’d be like attending my high school all over again, because it has a relatively small undergraduate population and has a reputation of being rich, preppy, conservative, and snobby. My gut was screaming NOOO when I visited although there was no legit reason why seeing as I visited during the summer…

Didn’t Apply:

I was interested in Temple and University of Pittsburgh for a while, but part of the reason they dropped off my radar (aside from both seeming too big to me) was because they each required applications separate from the Common App and I didn’t feel like filling those out.

Ithaca was on my list for a long time, too, but then I saw how much snow they’ve been getting and how cold it is… I live in Maine, and the weather there seemed like everything I’m sick of.

Applied/Intend to apply:

I applied to Colby-Sawyer because they kept sending me stuff in the mail. Though now that I’ve looked into them, I do like them.

Over the summer I looked at a lot of colleges, but the only one still on my list is Swarthmore… I was in love with it before, but by now I’ve realized that even if I got in, I probably wouldn’t want to go. I think I’m applying because my aunt expects me to.

I love all the “kooky California” comments, they crack me up (I live in California).

I am not going to apply to Lehigh because my mom went their and it’s to hilly.
I am not going to apply to Tulane because my dad went their.
I am not going to apply to Auburn, Clemson or App State because my cousins go/went their. (See a pattern? lol).

^get it right, it’s “THERE” not “THEIR.”
And why wouldn’t you apply to Lehigh or Tulane? you would benefit from the legacy thing.
But i understand why you wouldn’t want to attend the same school at the same time as your cousin. i don’t even want to go to the same college as somebody from my school.

Son didn’t apply to Lafayette because he didn’t want to go to class in a room with a fireplace. He didn’t apply to Villanova because he couldn’t think of an answer to their essay prompt (even though he really liked the school).

I didn’t apply to Duke because of a basketball game in which they beat my favorite team BEFORE I was born…

I didn’t apply to any of the schools that i actually wanted to go to (UChicago, Carnegie Mellon, UNC, W&M, JHU, Duke, Columbia) after i read the stats on cc. The fact that I was a lazy *** and didn’t feel like writing any essays may have also contributed. A year later, I am now at a state school (the only place i applied to), where I am completely unhappy and in the process of applying as a transfer. Looking back though, I’ve realized that most of the schools that were my top choices are probably not that great of match for me. Still, I’d probably be happier at any of those places than where I am right now.

i applied to uchicago only because there was early action and it was ranked high. =))

then later, i found out from a friend that uchicago is actually a really awesome school, so i googled it some, and i actually wanted to get into the school. but not as much as i wanted to get into cornell of course

one of the reasons i like cornell is that its school color is red, and i like the color red

i also just like the ring of the word cornell. you can just say that word and a bunch of ppl will recognize it. whereas with UPenn you’re gonna get ppl thinking it’s penn state and stuff

i didn’t apply to washu because a) it’s in missouri b)it’s name is funny (washington in missouri?) c) because i’ve heard of how they love to advertise their school a lot and what do you know, i get an email from them everyday asking me to apply

Because my mother taught there. I reasoned that I was interested in the department where she worked, and felt that I would have been unable to pursue my interest in said department because it is kind of awkward being taught by (and doing research under) people who all know your mother. But I applied to multiple schools where that department wasn’t even offered–I attend one of those now, in fact–so in retrospect, that was kind of fail logic on my part.

This isnt an anecdote about applying to colleges, but more about prioritizing which ones I would actually go to if accepted

The girl of my dreams made it in ED to Northwestern. She skipped a grade so we are both the same age but she’s a year ahead of me in school.
I was going to apply EA to Uchicago anyways (im polsci/econ, and Uchicago beats NU in that regard). But when I heard that she was going to NU, I knew I needed to end up in Chicago somehow. I worked really, really hard on the supplements, and my passion showed. I was accepted.
I’m going to call her up and bang her next year.

I applied to all my schools because they were ranked high on USNews.

Knew people who didn’t apply to BU because they didn’t allow cable TV in the dorms.

I applied to some schools EA because they waived the app fee. I don’t know if thats the stupidest reason… but I feel kinda bad about it now. For instance, I will probably not go to Simmons C, but applied anyway because it was in Boston (pretty much where I want to go), it’s pretty much as “safety” as it gets for me… academics-wise, and it was… free to apply! Now I could be taking a slot away from a perfectly good B student who would love to go there…

I didn’t apply to any school which required a total of more than 500 words of writing in supplements.

2 of my schools don’t have supplements and the other 4 have 500 words of writing each. 6 schools are more than enough. all common app obviously. seriously these essays are a pain in the ass…

didn’t like the other school’s coat of arms.

I’m vietnamese and my Dad didn’t want me to apply to Yale because of the vietnamese girl who got murdered there a couple of years ago.
