What's the Highest Number of Schools You Know Someone Applied to?

so zzzzzzzzzzz, you left out the punch line! Exactly how many common app schools are there? What would the total bill in app fees be?

ok... answering my own question; A quick trip to commonapp.org reveals a numbered list of colleges... 298 total!!! Some are free... but let's say $50 per app. That would be $14,900!! And don't forget score reports! $9.5 * 298 = $2831. I say, Go for it!

My D is just getting around to her 9th supplement and is fatigued by the process, as are her parents. I can't imagine 15 much less 40.

The concept of applying to all Common App schools is so silly -- I mean, they're all over the place in terms of -- everything!! Yale and Agnes Scott College and Massachusetts College of Pharmacy??!! (Just to pick a few random ones.) Thank goodness the counselor talked them out of it. That's just plain silly!

cptofthehouse: I take your point. I didn't realize that.

Like i said some people are scholar or something like that, they are waived by admission fees, so all they need is click online and apply, no need to pay. But still more than 15 schools is too much and waste time, even 10 is considered high.

My cousin's daughter is applying to 18. I've seen the list and its not appropriate for her academic (low) level. I don't know what the college counselor is thinking. Setting up a family for major disappointments. I told my cousin to post on What are My Chances but sometimes I don't think people want reality checks. oh well.

I was at a party this past weekend, and the son of our hosts said he had applied to 18 schools. I thought it was utterly ridiculous, so I just nodded and smiled. I didn't ask any questions. ;)

Most I ever heard of was a friend's kid who applied to 19 -- and was admitted to all 19 too, including HYPS. I never could figure out why a kid who was strong enough to sweep the HYPS board felt the need to apply to that many schools. He ended up at Yale.

I have one friend who applied to 18 schools, another to 23. Both had the support of their own parents (but raised eyebrows from the rest of ours), and both are of the Class of 2007.

Our school's record was broken last year when someone applied to 60 (oh goodness gracious, SIXTY?!) schools; this was confirmed by the registrar's office. The people there wouldn't reveal who it was, but we're all pretty sure it wasn't someone who ended up anywhere great.

By the way, people here are generally too rich to have fees waived. I don't even want to bother with the calculations (since the registrar's office also charges exponentially for each transcript sent), but, then again, people in this area -can- manage to pay those sorts of prices.

I only applied to 7, though.

Sixty?? You gotta be kidding. That is absolutely nuts. It would be interesting to see if the registrar's office will tell you how many the student was accepted to. I hope for all that time and money they were accepted at more than one . . .

Maybe some kids think it's easier to apply first and research the schools later (after acceptance) vs. trying to find the best match schools up front. Kind of like the people who apply to six safety schools.

By the way, when we ran our poll (How Many Colleges Did You Apply To?) last year, about 38% of responders applied to 10 or more schools.

did we ask WHY? and if they could see themselves at each and every school

there were many posts last year for kids who got acceptences at schools they had no real intention of going to who had wished they had done more research before hand, and put focus and energy into fewer applications that were chosen more selectiveley and carefully

guess I don't get the willynilly approach taken for something so important

Fees can be waived for reasons other than financial need (i.e. merit-based, as judged by standardized test scores). They occasionally accompany the "Please apply here!" letters and brochures. Some schools also waive the fee if you apply online...stuff like that. No, it's not the majority, but juuust for the record.

I know a fair number of west coasters who applied to lots and lots of east coast schools without knowing much about them. It makes sense in some ways, especially considering that so many of those schools are big reaches (top LACs, ivies). Given spotty odds, it's cheaper to fill out the applications now than pay for the trip, and if you're admitted and still interested upon a bit of further research, THEN you can make a more purposeful visit. I think there are a lot of benefits to seeing a school after you're already accepted, so if you can only visit once, there can be a lot of logic to "over-applying," so to speak.

(Mind you, by "over-applying" I definitely do not mean 60 schools. Wow.)

Visiting schools is seriously expensive, both in terms of time and money. I can well understand applying to schools that the student has never visited.

When I was a young thing, back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, many of my friends applied to colleges on the basis of reputation and areas of specialty, without ever visiting them.

Next year my DD will apply to a few that are just too far away and too isolated to justify visiting if she's not going to be accepted AND get serious financial aid.

I can understand not being able to visit schools and still applying, of course that is what most people do

BUT, do kids that apply to top LAC really look at the schools- through books, online, the communities, the courses, the dorms, the campus

you can find an awful lot about schools by looking at say, majors offered

I mean some apply to schools in isolated communites without really thinking, do I want that kind of school

I think a student should be able to strike a balance and do a little work beforehand

Seems kind of lazy to just through a bunch of cards in the air, see what lands faceup THEN see what you can do...why not narrow down the list a bit, and while you do that, you learn about yourself and what you really want

I think the average ay my Ds school, not counting the UC system is about 6

i know someone that applied to 18

I know someone who applied to 75 schools. Needless to say, she didn't end up anywhere good.
