Can somebody enlighten me? Why are all accounting majors aiming for Big Four jobs if they are 1) planning on only staying a while since they speak of exit opportunities and 2) accounting is supposed to be the most versatile business major out there? Why aim for Big Four?

I think for experience. And it’s a very good thing for a resume.

^pretty much what he said.

then what opportunities await one who has worked at one of the Big Four companies?

You can work for F500 companies. You can pretty much anywhere you want. There are only handful of jobs that exposes to this many exit opportunities. In addition, you can make senior within 2-3 years. In industry, it takes about 5-7 years to become senior level. Furthermore, you’re likely to be promoted over other people who do not have Big4 experience. With audit background, you don’t necessarily have to go to accounting.

It’s a great way to build your network, especially if you do audit. Not only will you meet lots of people from the firm itself throughout your engagements, you’ll also meet high up financial officers of very large F500 companies.
