Some UC's do it, including Berkeley....but what's the point? Why can't they just accept them for Fall?

Berkeley says it’s random and that they just don’t have room to accommodate everyone immediately. From what I’ve heard, it has to do with seniors graduating in the fall semester and kids dropping out which contributes to the extra availability for spring admission.

Hmm interesting. Thanks for your response.

Do you know how many students are chosen for spring, and whether it matters what major/whether it is impacted or not? Is it common with transfer students? That would suck…

It’s common enough; there are roughly 500 spring admit transfers each year. It doesn’t really matter what major either. I know a few spring admits in L&S and Haas. I have no clue about CS, Engineering, or things like that though.

I thought it went something like Cal admitting slightly inferior students to spring so that their general acceptance rate is lower (cuz they only include fall, right?) and so their students’ stats are higher.

Wrong?

If Berkeley accepts around 500 spring admits, how many do they typically admit for the fall? Just curious

@ City: I don’t think it has to do as much with inferiority as much as it has to do with retention rates. As I mentioned in another thread, I personally know people with 4.0’s that were spring admits.

As for the general acceptance rate, I’m not entirely sure. That could be a possibility as well.

@ Naniwa: I think they accept something like 3,300? I could be off by a bit though.

Ah, I see. Strange that 4.0 kids would be given spring. Maybe they had some other flaw in their app though…I just can’t see why Cal would want to skew their stats AND give MORE high-achieving students incentive to go elsewhere by giving them spring admit.

@CityByCity: I actually wouldn’t mind being a Spring admit and I’m a 4.0. I’d be very grateful just to get in.

But a lot of people would mind. Especially if they got fall offers from universities they wanted to attend neck-in-neck with Berkeley. Of course, some will keep Berkeley as their first choice and decline the fall offers, but if someone felt completely equally about two schools (say UCB and UCD), getting spring admit for UCB would probably be the tipping factor into UCD’s favor.

^youre honestly describing me with that whole scenario. Except with UCLA. Why oh why should I delay my education for them when I have an equally bomb choice for fall?! It’s all about preference though…omg all this talk of spring, and I feel like I’m going to get in for Spring…yeeeesh
