I just signed up to take some subject tests in June, but I was thinking--what is the point of taking these? Only top colleges really ask for them, but most kids who actually get into those schools have multiple APs, making the subject tests just silly in comparison. Personally, I'm taking the chem, US history, and math subject tests in June even though I'm taking AP chem and APUSH in May. And obviously if you take AP Calc, you'll know how to do the basic math on the SAT IIs. So why bother taking these? It just bothers me that if I want to apply to a top school I have to take them when I've already paid for multiple AP exams.

Some schools don’t offer APs, so it wouldn’t be fair to rely on AP exams for admission purposes. Also, most high school students do not take college level courses while in high school.

The SATIIs are also much cheaper than the AP exams. Imagine telling people that they need to pay $80 per exam in order to apply to college.

I am an IB student where exams are $200+ per subject. In addition to taking those exams, I cannot afford to pay for $80 AP exam, which has a completely different focus.

And at least for IB, you can find out the results much faster. I just think it is a more equal, fair way to test basic knowledge if that makes any sense.

FYI, You don’t have to bother yourself to take them if you feel they are pointless.
