Weather, party scene, diversity in general population, restaurants, malls, market, classiness

Hey Potter, Andover is FREEZING in summer…

I dont know more than that, but I want to know if you are applying to Phillips Andover, because you look interested with all the posts you are posting :PP

I also am applying to Phillips Academy in Andover for next year 11th grade ;))

I have been there (both for an interview last year and the E/A games this year) and I’ll just let you know, it’s very preppy and pretty rich, not gunna lie. North Andover is a big places for preps and is somewhat similar to some connecticut towns. The downtown of Andover is very pretty but has a wide variety of stores. All in all, its a very nice town but a little too “rich feeling” for my liking.

thanks people. is it like Gossip Girl preppy? Ha-ha, Chuck Bass man!!

Well, I live pretty close to Andover so here’s what I know.

Andover is a rich kids town. Kids from other towns don’t really like the kids from Andover b/c many of them are rich jerks. Andover has some nice shops and such, and a decent downtown.

Weather - cold in the winter, not gonna lie.

Party scene - errr… pretty much none. Downtown Andover basically shuts down at night except for CVS.

No big malls in Andover itself, but the school offers busses to nearby malls on occasion.

There’s a trip to the Loop, which is like groceries and a small shopping plaza every other week, but it’s easily within walking distance (~15 minutes) should you want to walk.

Downtown Andover is pretty nice. Dunkin’ Donuts, a couple of coffee shops, Bertucci’s, Dylan’s (American-style restaurant), and a couple other restaurants. 24-hr CVS is a lifesaver.

I’m not sure what the general vibe from other towns is, but it’s a pretty well off town.

Oh and uh what Gabiiwoz said about North Andover - not completely sure what relevance that has. It’s a completely different town, and not within walking distance of Phillips Academy. Most PA kids will never set foot there, unless they are day students that live there.

Dull. We never did anything there, it was always catch the bus into Boston, about a 40 min ride to the Common.

^ Just for the sake of explaining where some of PA’s day students come from and such.

Andover is honestly a much nicer town than Exeter. They have a Whole Foods and cobblestone streets with very nice shops. Any town that has a Whole Foods can’t be that bad-looking.

i just really want to live in a town like Andover. Not too busy, not too quiet.

May Santa grant your wish!

i have other wishes you know.

Santa has tightened his belt in this economy. Only one wish for each season.

As far as what is open and closed downtown at night…it’s likely not going to be relevant because you’ll be required to be on campus/in your dorm after certain hours. I must say, I appreciated CVS being open 24/7 as a faculty member this summer, but it’s not particularly relevant as a student, in theory. Perhaps it is on Friday nights? As stated above, there’s really no party scene nearby, though. You may find you don’t have time for a party scene, anyways. It depends on what you get involved with.

You’re confusing the Loop and Shawsheen Plaza. Every weekend (at least, when I was a student…), there was a bus to Shawsheen Plaza, which is as described above. Fairly small, but it’s something. Once a term, there’s a bus trip to the Loop, which is a much larger outdoor mall. It has several restaurants, clothing stores, a Borders, among other stores. The Loop is in a separate town and definitely not within walking distance, but it’s a nice enough place.

Andover is, compared to nearby towns, well-off. Not exceedingly diverse, though. At a boarding school, you’ll find that downtown and not much more of Andover is relevant to your life, though.

I live in North Andover, the town right next to Andover, and my sister is a senior at Phillips as a day student and I’m also applying for next year.
Andover is really beautiful. But it gets FREEZING in the winter (New England Winters…Brrr!!!). The population of Andover is basically rich, white people but Phillips is so diverse. There are no malls in Andover. There are some malls nearby. There is no “party scene”. Maybe something underground but, no clubs or anything. It’s very suburban family-ish. Downtown Andover is fun to visit. Tons of shops and restaurants. You will spend lots of time downtown whether it’s at Starbucks, CVS, Bertuccis, Andover Book Store, etc.

Does Andover ever has a ‘snow-day’? 'cause I don’t see any school-closing notice on the local TV about Phillips Academy. It’s so depressing for day-students that school is not closed in the inclement weather like bittterly winter blizzard scene just like today. I checked some other boarding schools like Miiddlesex or Nobles closed, but no Andover. Do boarders really have to walk to the classroom under this harsh weather in Andover?

Because most of the faculty and students live on or really near campus, they call snow days rarely if ever. Day students were encouraged to spend last night with a boarder, sounds like it could be fun. And it’s actually very beautiful out right now!

My brother is home today because we got ~16 inches. It’s permissible for a day student to be excused from classes if they feel they cannot get to campus safely. I haven’t looked outside, but it must have been bad - any time there was snow, I was woken up at 3:30 to shovel so I could get to school. The closest Andover has had to a snow day in quite some time is that Head of School day (an unfixed day off during winter term announced the day before when the Head of School comes into Commons with a field hockey stick) might coincide with bad weather. (And yes, some boarders and even faculty have been complaining on Facebook about walking around campus, although normally they’re very good about clearing the pathways.)
