Whats the use?

Of continuing to live when you know that you will not amount to anything. I mean really what purpose do we serve by living? We either spend our lives laboring under people we hate or even if we are sucessful, then what? Even if we have everything in the world whats the use? Why do we need to live? I really can't comprehend what keeps mankind alive. Please answer as you feel appropriate.

That's what you need to figure out by yourself. We can't give you the answers to that, because you're your own human being with different dreams and goals than us. That said, you wouldn't do any good dead.

Ah, aka "What is the meaning of life?"
I agree with tommeister--it depends on who you are and what your beliefs are.
If you're a secularist, you live purely for sensual pleasures in life, and those luxuries are what propel your motives to live.
If you're a highly moral and pious person, perhaps you live to better the world.
In any case, I believe it's a philosophical matter right now and we can't really give a definite answer to it.
I suppose those who are religious could answer this question in religious terms.

And even if we did find out why we're here and who or what created us, then we would start questioning that entity that creates us and wonder where those origins were, and if there was a creator of the creator then we'd wonder where that came from too.
That's the funny thing. There seems to be no end to the purpose of existence.

I have to disagree with you on one point, Psycho. You said that "If you're a secularist, you live purely for sensual pleasures in life, and those luxuries are what propel your motives to live." which isn't really true. Many people who don't perscribe to a particular religion are highly moral people, and live to better the world just as much as someone deeply religious would.

Ok, sorry about that. I stated it to the extreme, but yeah I get what you're trying to say.

thanks. .

Life is pretty interesting when you really think about it. Ever since I lost my father in early Aug. of this year, the reality of life has really came out to me. If you look at it, we are born, work our a**es off for our life, then die, and make everyone else depressed and sadened. It is pretty stupid the way that life works, and people don't realize it.

The meaning of life is to procreate, and thus ensure more life in the future.

get off myspace

"The meaning of life is to procreate, and thus ensure more life in the future[for our species]."
That is the darwinian approach. We will never really know the meaning of life and why we strive so assiduously to remain alive. That said, we might as well choose a path of contentment and recititude. In other words, that is why important to opt for a profession that you like rather than the one that generates the greatest income and seek joy even in solemn circumstances.

no offense, patrickk, but you sound pretty depressed. Maybe you should see someone....

You are in absolutely no position to refer someone to another person.

Hmmm, straight from A to B without stopping to smell the flowers, eh? Life is about taking pleasure in the little things. Even during midterms, I take time to feed the ducks, go stargazing, or just meander through the Gardens. Like mark19 said, picking an enjoyable profession is important.

Hey mcqdeltat,
Pretty provocative post, you got some bites, but you haven't responded. What's up?

I would agree, and say that is probably one of the most important things you should do in your life. Pick a career in something that you love, without even considering the salary. I'm afraid too many people become lawyers, businessmen, etc because they want to make a lot of money. (not to say that lawyers/executives are out for the money, not at all. But I think many are)

Pick something you could see yourself doing for a loooong time. You will most certainly be happier at a job you adore, making an average salary, than at a job you really deep-down despise, even if you're making a ton o' cash.

Food for thought.

I still think you should see someone...You to smallz, youre a bit of a nutter as well. No offense, but thats just my opinion.

And why is that zip? Because I gave a lesson in life? Or do you think I'm crazy because I feel people should strive to be happy instead of rich?

I just think you should see someone bc you have problems accepting other arguments and positions that are not your own. And you have given me no lessons in life. My positions remain unchanged.

"I just think you should see someone bc you have problems accepting other arguments and positions that are not your own".

speak for yourself , Zipdrive

Umm... First of all I don't use myspace (I think its a gathering of losers), Secondly all people who say that we should choose a career we like, well you still have to work and whats the use after all that work? maybe you get some money, then you die. what was the use of living some years? Also what if you're not interested in anything then what? what if you don't want to work at all?
Who here shares my opinion?
