Originally, I'd planned to stay on the west coast for college, but now my mind is wandering slightly east. I have family in the area and have always loved visiting, but I really know nothing about the school...

Why are you applying? What attracts you to the University of Chicago?

-- number one rankings on some list somewhere for the majors of both economics and religion
-- social sciences (antropology, sociology, public policy, and of course econ are popular majors here)
-- quiet (relatively)
-- coffee shops
-- bookstores
-- long conversations with housemates and friends over what you're reading, what you're writing
-- the "anti-ivy"-- Chicago is NOT a preprofessional school, and pre-law and pre-meddies are not as prevalent here as they are elsewhere. A lot of students, if anything are pre-professors!

not true, amykins, chicago is in the top ten in the nation for sending undergrads to med school! thats what's so great about it... you can end up specializing in medicine but still hold a very solid foundation in areas such as the social sciences, arts, etc.

and also, they are equally well known for their achievements in the sciences. look at how many science nobel prizes their students have earned!

pr, I suggest you visit. You will get the "campus vibe." Also, take a look at the application on their website. It says a lot about the school. It's a dealmaker/breaker for a lot of people!
