I visited Wagner a few weeks ago, and I really really loved it. I want to go in as a general theater major (their course listing says Theater is divided into 3 parts- general, musical, and technical). However, when I asked the theatre faculty how I would go about auditioning for it, they were really really ambiguous. One said audition for the musical theatre program, one said I should do an interview... I don't really want to be a musical theatre major because I feel there are more opportunities for me to study a variety of things as a general drama student. Has anyone been to/had the same problem at Wagner who can tell me what exactly their deal is? Thanks!!

You can certainly attend Wagner for straight theater, which does not require an audition. I had a client a couple years ago who wanted to study straight theater in a BA school. She applied and got into Wagner with scholarship for theater (and had an interest as well in Ancient History). She chose another school to attend. I recall her having an interview at the school. There was NO audition, I'm positive. She had no interest in MT. To attend for the MT program, you must audition.

Thank you..your answer has been very helpful!

Actually, I want to take a little bit back of what I wrote....sooooo sorry! To be in the Performance MAJOR, you have to audition (and it includes MT). You only interview for the Design/Tech/Management tracks. BUT, my memory had a little lapse for a moment because the girl I worked with who got into Wagner wanted to major in History and Minor in Theater or at least DO theater and at Wagner, the theater courses are open to those not in the major. That worked for her. This very well might NOT work for you if you want an Acting Performance MAJOR....I think you would then need to AUDITION.

In fact, I just remembered that earlier this fall I was contacted by a family whose daughter got into Wagner for this year and was entering but wanted MT and mistakenly had no idea she had to audition to get in and I think for someone like that, it was not so great to go to Wagner as she is NOT in the program officially and can possibly audition this year to transfer into that major but with no guarantees. OTHERwise, she just can take courses but not major in PERFORMANCE. I personally felt she'd be better off with a gap year but I won't get into that. Going to Wagner and wanting to MAJOR in theater requires an audition. You can ATTEND Wagner and take theater courses (may be able to MINOR in it....I have to look that up but that is what my client was planning to do if she attended Wagner a few years ago who wanted ot study both History and Theater and NOT JUST theater.

Sorry to have possibly been misleading and I went to edit my post but you responded within two minutes and it was too late to fix it. I went to check as my memory wasn't as accurate as I thought when I posted off the cuff at first.

Follow up....Wagner does have a Theater Minor and that was the plan for my client who wanted to also study History. That's why she had no audition.

Patsy....if you are not already confused....LOL.....Wagner's BA is in THEATER and that is what may be confusing. It is not really called a MT Major but rather a BA in THEATER. However, their program has a MT emphasis, along with the acting training, and the audition requirements include singing. Just wanted to point that out.

If you want to attend Wagner for a THEATER MAJOR in PERFORMANCE, it is gonna include some MT. You can't attend and only do Acting performance. However, you can MINOR in Theater without an audition or singing.

Yeah... I don't mind the audition- I've done hundreds of those lol. But instead of an area concentrated totally on performance I'd like the freedom to really explore other areas like directing. costuming, etc. I just don't want to get into the musical theater and not be able to 'downgrade' to a regular degree. Maybe I should contact an admissions officer and not hang up the phone until they give me a straight answer lol
