Hey all,
just wondering what the general feel of Vanderbilt is like for a kid from northern NJ.
I have a brother at Duke and he said that some of the "southerners" were not too happy about sharing their space with the northerners....
Is this a legitimate concern?
Thanks in advance

also, does anyone know what it would be like at UVA?
Thanks again

You’ll probably get a better answer from posting in those respective schools’ forums.

thank you did not even think of that.

I dont know what the school itself is like, but I’ve visited the campus and thought it was pretty cool.

I am a big fan of Vanderbilt and my impression has changed since I moved to Nashville 5 years ago. I always knew Vandy was a top university, but I have really come to appreciate all it has to offer. The campus is beautiful and integrates well with Nashville. Nashville is a great place to live and go to school. The presence of the incredible medical school/facility really elevates things, too. I appreciate the SEC sports scene, and with the improvement in football this year and an awesome new coach, all three major sports are exciting and fun. There is a very strong frat scene, but many students claim it is fine to not be involved with that. There are a lot of southerners, but Nashville has a LOT of transplants, and Vandy is attracting more and more students from other parts of the country. You should visit.

You will feel right at home at Vandy or Duke if you come from New Jersey.:D

Suggesting that people form the south don’t like people from the north is pretty ridiculous. I lived in the north at one point in time too, but I promise the south is pretty similar to the north. I’m sure you would feel welcomed at any of the mentioned schools.

To answer your second question…Vandy and UVa are VERY similar IMO. Yes, Vandy is private and UVa is public; however, UVa “feels” like a private along the lines of Wake, Vandy, and to a certain degree, Northwestern. UVa receives very little of its funds from the state of VA (8% or something like that), and operates in a more or less semi-public manner. It’s a bit larger than Vandy (appx. 3,500 or so more undergrads). The social vibe is comparable between UVa and Vandy (“southern” feel, strong Greek climate, work hard/play hard attitude, rigorous academics, etc.). A large percentage of students who apply to Vandy apply to UVa and visa versa because they are so similar.

There is actually a fairly large group of students from the mid-Atlantic. In general Vandy is middle of the road politically. People tend to be very friendly and attractive (I think they’re #9 on the list of “most blondes” or something superficial like that). Obviously everyone is extremely intelligent. There’s a big Greek culture, but Nashville is a great city to explore if you’re not into that.
