my son skateboards (a lot) and doesn’t presently own a bike. we’ve experienced the davis terrain on the campus visit. is there a place to get a good, reasonably priced bike on campus?

How about an electric bike? It can be used as either peddling bike or with the small motor. Very reasonable costs, some even fold up to fit in dorm room. We have several and love them. Best place to check is ELV Motors in San Jose. They have all models and great prices!

Here are some things to let people know…
if the book looks nice, people will want to steal it. I do see people with $500+ bikes around, just make sure to get a good lock. Get one of the higher end kryptonite locks (~$100) and you should be good. Oh, and try to avoid getting a bike with any easy/quick release parts, cause people just snap off ur seat or wheel and run off with it. If you do end up getting one with easy release parts, get an extra chain lock to secure those parts. Hope this helps.

Calimama, the bikestore on campus, bike barn, seems to overprice bikes. And the bikes are kinda stupid. There are a few nice local bike shops in downtown Davis just a few blocks off campus that sells pretty nice bikes. But uh… local bike shops usually sell $$$ bikes, just letting u know If you want something cheap, DEPARTMENT STORE!!! there are walmarts and targets nearby :)

My d has a 6-speed at davis (she’s a freshman there) but she tells me she only uses 1 speed. It is very flat. Everyone says (and I agree) to spend more money on the lock than on the bike. And get one with a back fender - or you will get wet! Buy a used bike - or go to Target or wal-mart.

There’s no need to get an extreme lock, like Kryptonite’s new york one. Get a thirty dollar ulock with an additional wire lock and you’ll be fine. Those NY Kryptonites are for people with thousand dollar bikes.

For someone who is not an experienced bike rider at all, and has never owned one, a) where can I get one for an affordable price? b) what kind of bike should I get?

The most affordable bikes are department store bikes. They are of shoddy quality but they are very cheap, some go as low as 150 dollars. Or you could look around your local bike shop to see if they have good brands on sale. If you want a bike just for getting from point A to B, look for a commuter bike, or a beach cruiser. If you want as little parts as possible to worry about, get a single speed version (no gears to change); avoid fixed gears if your dress style is remotely hipster.
