What's Your Heritage?

African American is brown. I wonders who started the Black.

brown african americans are likely to have white blood in them

Have you seen people from Africa? They are REALLY black.

lol lol to the post above. so blunt.

im half turkish...12.5% roughly german, some french, syrian, lebanese, and italian i think..

what a mix.

what's so blunt about stating that true african americans are black?

we are reading books about the African American experience, and in contrast to what people usually think, some lighter skined black may actually get made fun of because they are not REALLY black.

I have a classmate who is 50% black (she is totally brown by the way) and got made fun on all the time in Oakland.

well, one should always be proud of the color his/her family gave him/her

Blackdream, please stop posting. The things you say are just plain dumb.

All Africans and African-Americans are brown, but by convention they are called black. Their skin is no more black than Europeans' is white. Even in the deepest reaches of sub-saharan Africa there is not a single group that is "REALLY black." Very dark, yes. Black, definitely not.

ctrain890, please stop posting, things you say are just plain dumb.

I suggest you read some black literature and see how they call their own skin.
Go read Gloria Naylor's "Mama Day", see what she says.

Do you have a friend who is African American and did he/she actually talked about skin color with you? If you don't have such an experience, please don't comment. I am sure a lot of African Americans will really laugh at you for saying that they are all "brown". Some of them are, yes, they are mix that maybe traced back to slavery times, but some of them are truly black.

Just go google for Africa.

I apolgize for not being able to distinguish dark and black, but there are fair number of African people whose skin tone has NO brown in it.

Why don't your ancestor call them "brown people" then? If you think the word brown is so smart.

Actually, Blackdream, half my family is black. I know what it's like to be called a zebra, oreo, etc. If you don't have such an experience, please don't comment.

Why don't Europeans call themselves "tan" or whatever instead of "white." It's not meant to be literal.

then you should know that African blacks are black, unless they have white blood. I was not saying mixed blacks are black, i was saying that PURE blacks are black.

also, I doubt Europeans are "tan", maybe you've seen too much TV?

go to google search for "star trek nerd", there should be a fair amount of really white europeans.

Why this discussion?

Are Japanese people white? Are Italians brown? Are Siberians pink? C'mon.

"African American is brown."

Actually, Indians are. Seen Russell Peters?

Anyway, all humans are brown, just different shades.

Ok, DO NOT JUST LOOK AT TV STARS.

that was my original point. Ever wonder why all the African American seem to be on the brown side, european americans seem to be on the tan side, and Asian americans seem to be on the white side?

despite what their TV and anime tells you, Japanese is not white.
here is a rule of thumb - look at older people.

Older white people are still white
Older asian - you can clearly see their yellowish color, their white skins usually have a yellow tone to it.
Older black - tI dunno, haven't seen enough of them.

Wow. All I can say is wow...

twinkie--My goal is not to get into a debate about gradients of color among any group of people. But when someone makes a ridiculous statement like "real Africans are pure black," it begs a response.

In terms of skin color, no such thing as black skin actually exists. What appears to be black is actually just really really brown.

skin colors are bought by a pigment named "melanin"

a page about melanine
http://omlc.ogi.edu/spectra/melanin/

it's "black to dark brown" (eumelanin)

color is a personal perspective thing, if i got it wrong, i am sorry. I have seen African international students, and they seem to be totally black to my eyes

when i said the word "real african" means africans come from africa. If you are mix i don't mean you are any less african. sorry about this offense, it was an accident. i am generally not careful with words.

This thread has taken a completely useless tangent, that won't get anyone anywhere.

On a lighter note, I must comment that Serin's very, very pretty. (If you remember the "Post your Picture" thread back in November, you may remember seeing Serin's picture)

who is serin.

Yeah ..I was gonna say the same thing Blackdream.

Blackdream: Serin's post is #103 in this thread.

beautiful people everywhere.

omg reading over all these ethinicities makes me wanna try all kinds of food!
