I'm wondering what percent of an ethnicity one needs to be to qualify on an application as part of that ethnic group. I was born in the US and for all intents and purposes, I am usually considered "white" (whatever that means) but my grandfather is a first generation immigrant who is 100% middle eastern. Obviously that makes me 25%. Should I list myself as multi-racial?

I believe that if you are at least 25% of something, you can state that you are that specific race (multi-racial would be perfectly fine). Now, if you were like 1/16th middle eastern or something of the sort, that wouldn't really count.

i think its 1/8 or more?

middle eastern is considered caucasian anyway.

Heck, even the darkest Indian or Pakistani is racially categorized as caucasian. What makes you think that Middle Eastern makes you something other than white? Your Iranian, Iraqi (or whatever) ancestry may add a note of interest/diversity, but it does not change your race. Sorry...

Oh, I didn't realize that middle eastern is categorized as Caucasian. So should I not even bother to list it at all?

I thought Middle Eastern was Asian?

Actaully, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran and even Turkey are located in southwest Asia, according to the U.S. Army.

The countries are located in Asia, but their race is classified as Caucasian.

"The Caucasian race, sometimes the Caucasoid race, is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as "relating to a broad division of humankind covering peoples from Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Central Asia, North Africa and South Asia.""

That's from Wikipedia, and I know at least BC's app says that those from the Middle East fall under the Caucasian category.

you're right. middle eastern would count as Caucasian, including indians.
I learn this last year there are three races: the mongoloid (orientals more or less), Caucasoid, and the Afrikaans (include those in the pacific islands)

Whether or no Middle Eastern ethnicities are grouped under "Caucasian" might vary at different schools; you could always call and ask. On last year's UMichigan application, at least, the choices were African-American/Black, Asian/Pacific Islander, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaskan, Other, multi-racial and...

"Caucasian/White (not of Hispanic origin, but having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, North Africa, or the Middle East)"

Ok, thanks guys. Looks like I will have to try to get in based on grades.
