So I am currently attending a Californian CC, just finished my first semester, and about to start my second. But due to family reasons, I might be moving to Minnesota next school year (2013-201?).

I don't know when I'll be able to transfer, but I plan to go back to California when I can. I'm guessing I'll have to pay out of state tuition since I would have lived in Minnesota prior to transferring (correct me if I'm wrong). So my question is, how long technically would I have to live in California before becoming eligible for in-state tuition.

I’d assume that moving to MN will set back the clock to day 1 of the year it takes to get residency. But you need to look at the primary source, here are links to the websites for various CA publics:

[California Postsecondary Education Commission – Residency Requirements](http://www.cpec.ca.gov/CollegeGuide/Residency.asp)

Why do you need to move with your family? Is there nowhere for you to live while you are studying? Some of the CA CCs have residence halls. Transferring to one of them would mean you have a place to live while you are finishing your transfer program for the UCs and CSUs.

Do you live in California for non-educational purposes? Are you a dependent student?
in-state residency is usually determined by those two.

Check with the schools you’re interested in.

Yeah I just looked at a few of the colleges I’m interested in, and they said the same things. That I’d have to have at least 1 year of residency + 1 day prior to enrollment, Cal. DL, etc.

Also, I have thought about living elsewhere believe me, but I’m going because of the same reason I had to go to a CC instead of a UC, money. It saves a lot more money staying with my family while working to save up for moving out. But it looks like ill have to accelerate that plan now.
