Tomorrow I going to have a half-a-day because "Westboro Bapist Church", a notorious anti-semitic, anti-homosexual, anti-america, anti-everything extremist hate group/cult from Topeka, Kansas is holding a "Peacefully rally" outside my school (Elizabeth High School in NJ). My school is said by most as the largest in the Nation.....so...yeah.

Has anything like this happened to you guys?

As soon as I read the title of this thread, Fred Phelps and his “church” came to mind, I have to admit that I was surprised to hear that it is Fred’s group you are talking about. Anyway, I feel kinda sorry for you about the rally Freddy is holding, but on the brightside, you get a half-day.

The only event that even comes close to your situtation happened about two or three years ago. This one Korean senior was wanted by 5 different police departments for a gang-related double homicide that happened about 20 miles from where the school is located. It was pretty shocking since my school is about 70% Asian so we have a plentiful supply of nerds and not too much violence.

WBC visited our school too, and I can say that the response was quite…unique.
Some kid in my tennis team apparently mooned one of the WBC people and got a suspension. The News Crew came too, but the counter-protesters of the WBC people were pretty peaceful and stuff.
WBC has some crazy arse people though

I live in KS, and WBC protested outside a local HS (Shawnee Mission East) which had elected a gay prom king a few years ago. WBC’s less than 15 people (sadly, kids included), were met with a counter-rally of over a thousand people organized by students at that school. They ended up raising $5000 for AIDS. The best way to respond is to turn their publicity against them–WBC provides some of the best publicity FOR the LGBT community.

Jon,
How does this bunch of jerks (WBC) choose where to show up?
Generallyrong, I think your school had a great response. That’s the only way to stop them.

Damn, Elizabeth’s pretty far from me. I would’ve come to support the anti-rally, but I’ve got to volunteer for a Trick or Sweet thing, and I can’t be late.

He has like what, 70 members in his organization? And everyone hates them. They’re a laughingstock. At least we know they’re rallies have very little or no effect.

They aren’t visiting because they principal or whatever told them to they’re there to hold a rally outside of the school. The administration has nothing to do with it. ANd about the guy who got suspended I don’t think he got in trouble for mooning them he just got in trouble for mooning anybody. It makes the school look bad if he was allowed to do that without getting in trouble. (I wasn’t sure who PV was talking about)

That’s ironic: one of my friends also from the NJ area told me about a protest by an extremist group from Kansas against gay right that was going to take place last week at her high school. It was going to be a pretty big deal, from my understanding… Apparently, only 5 people showed up to the protest. I’m assuming it was a statewide thing… Pretty lame if you ask me
