When and how to ask for recommendation letters?

Hi I am a rising senior and I was wondering if its ok to ask for rec letters on the first day of school.(I am planning to ask my teachers from junior year. Also, I am doing ED) Will they hate me for bothering them on the first day?? Should I wait until September or so?? I am just worried that they might get filled up and wouldnt take any more rec letters

Nope, I think it’s fine if you ask on the first day, especially because they were your junior teachers. You’ll likely be the first one to ask them, and they’ll have plenty of time to write the letter by the deadline. That way they have the option of getting it done within the first couple weeks or month of school, before the grading work really starts to pile up. Good luck!

The sooner the better. Many of us asked before school let out for the summer.

I agree with skieruope, get your rec letters promised early because all the good teachers are taken in the first month or earlier.

Try not to start off your convo by asking. It’s going to be awkward either way, but if you catch up with them a bit first, then it gives off the impression that you don’t just care about them for their reference letters. Also, make sure you ask if they will write you a STRONG/GOOD rec, or else it’ll be pointless anyway. Oh my gosh, I remember I was freaking out so much about having to do this, and the asking process was the most awk thing ever, but all of them wrote me pretty good ones.

Honestly, I’d wait until the second or third day. The first day of school is really stressful for any teacher, and waiting just a day or two won’t hurt.

Although the teacher may be busy when the school resumes, you should still approach them and at least make an appointment. Ideally, you should have some primary contacts before Summer and then follow up when school resumes. In case the teacher has time to meet with you when you first ask him/her, get yourself prepared. Work on your CV and school list now. You will need them for your conversation.

Thank you all! Im kind of scared but I will ask them as soon as school starts
