When and how to go about Internships?

Hey guys, I am a incoming freshman at Indiana University, I plan to go into investment banking upon graduation. I hope to be admitted into the Investment Banking Workshop, or the Investment Management Workshop while attending Indiana. I know once in these programs, you are set up with internships, but my question is how to get MEANINGFUL internships before your junior or senior year. Is it possible to get investment banking internships your sophomore or junior year summer? If not what's the next best couple of options? Also, any advice on how to make the most of your internships? Any words of wisdom on how to make your internships come back as full time offers? Do study abroad experiences impact your likely-hood of getting a full time offer post graduation?

Thanks for your help in advance!

It’s very possible to get PWM internships after your freshman year at BB’s like MS and Bank of America. Those open up some opportunities to network and brand yourself very early. Also will make you more competitive for getting into the IB workshop.

Other than that, I would suggest going and looking at the resumes of the current students in the workshop, see what they did their freshman/sophomore summers. Some did a lot, some didn’t. Honestly I haven’t been super impressed by a majority of those resumes, but there were a few really quality ones. Just know what to expect.

Good luck!

PWM is the most common pre-junior finance internship. You can get these relatively easily by just cold calling/emailing every BB PWM branch (ML, UBS, MS) and boutique asset management firms near your home. Something more unique and competitive would be a F500 CF internship, which you can get just by applying on their websites.

Larger banks also have sophomore leadership programs for IBD and S&T, albeit they are very selective. I would aim for regional boutiques if you are still an underclassman.

Something IU specific. A lot of kids who can’t get internships after their freshman/sophomore years (not entirely sure of the timeline), but they spend the summer in England and study at LSE for a few months. You’ll see that pop up on those resumes. Just another option.

I’ve read a lot about that, it seems almost routine for students interested in business/finance. Say I could get an internship over seas at a company in Dubai, not a banking related, would this benefit me in anyway? I was thinking it could stand out, but it could also be pointless since it doesn’t necessarily pertain to investment banking or banking in general. I was looking at the resumes, it seems to me that they were all involved with very advanced work. Maybe it just seems that way because I’m a senior in high school.

I have two more questions. I’ve been trying to contact local banks to talk to anyone willing to give me advice about the banking industry, and I’ve made one contact so far. I am meeting with him Wednesday, the purpose of this meeting is for him to give advice to a senior, but I want to turn it into something where I can possibly get an internship. Do you guys think this is possible? If yes, any recommended ways as to bringing up this topic and how to ask with out being overly aggressive?

Second question is, looking a bit into the future, say I am interning at a PWM firm as you guys mentioned or even getting a CF internship in a F500, how do you guys recommend meeting and talking to the “right people”. Any advice on how to be remembered and branch out and tap into different networks in the field?

Appreciate your guys’s advice! Thank you,

Alex

I would do a boutique ib internship over pwm

Trapezius, I assume you get boutique ib internships through cold calling and a bit of networking if you are not at a target school?

Yep cold calling would be the way to go.
