I was wondering if they tell you which learning communities are in which dorms when the housing application opens or when they release that information. If they don’t release it then, then how do you know how many roommates you should find since you have no idea which dorm the learning community you chose is and whether it’s a triple/double dorm?
**At Cal Poly, students apply to live in a Residential Learning Community— not a specific building. Residential Learning Communities house the academic, social, identity and interest-specific Living Learning Programs that connect and build community among first-year students.
Students indicate their top Residential Learning Community preferences in the application. To provide as many students as possible with the community of their choice, University Housing moves the location of programs from year to year.**
The application opens in Mid-March. After the application opens and one to two business days after accepting your offer of admission, go to University Housing on the Cal Poly Portal to secure housing. The last day to apply for housing or edit your application is May 7, 2019.
On the housing application you will:
Agree to the housing contract. (Designate a cosigner if you are under the age of 18.)
Make your initial payment ($500 for housing + $1,000 for dining).
Select your top Residential Learning Community preference.
Add accommodation information.
Request up to two roommates.
Select your preferred housing options — such as Gender-Inclusive Housing, a Dining Plan, Grad Guard Renters Insurance and more.
- Select your room Students select their own rooms on a first-come, first-served basis — based on the date you secured housing. In early June, students who have secured housing will be emailed their room selection appointment. You can select a room from the start of your appointment until the selection period closes.
Rooms available to you are based on your Residential Learning Community preferences, demand, and availability.
Some communities and room-types fill up quickly. We cannot guarantee that your top Residential Learning Community or your preferred room type will be available to you when you to select a room.
A few more tips:
Residential Learning Communities are important! You’re going to spend a lot of time with the people in your community. In your application, pick the community that you think will be the best fit for you.
You have the option of listing up to two roommates. Only one person in your roommate group should request roommates. All other members of the group must accept the roommate request for it to be valid.
Our residence halls feature a mix of double, triple and quad rooms. Review what room-types are offered in each community. That info will be helpful during room selection. But keep in mind: room-types are not guaranteed.
