When bad weather hits..

OK, so when Galveston gets blasted (by hurricane type weather) or some other gulf area, what impact is there to the Rice campus? Is it generally safe enough or are there evacuations? Flooded buildings? Do tornadoes hit the Houston area?

Thanks.

This thread will give you some idea of how the students fared when Hurricane Ike hit 3 years ago. The administration made sure to take care of the kids and they posted updates every day on the school’s website to let students, faculty and parents know what was going on.

Since Rice is on the same power grid as the medical center across the street, they were among the first to get power restored. That’s a good thing.

My son’s residential college had some exterior damage (bricks falling from the facade) and there was some minor flooding in the basement, but most of the damage was from fallen trees and limbs.

One of the great things about Rice is that students are part of their Residential college even if they live off campus. The masters had the list of those living off campus and they contacted them all to make sure they were OK, had plans, or to see if they wanted to come back on campus for Ike. DD had been living off campus but spent that time safely tucked into the safe area of one of the dorms and had people who cared looking out for her. They fed them without charging them (such as they could without power :)) She stayed until her apartment had power back, several days after campus had power.

interesting and reassuring reading!
