When choosing class what's more important to consider a) class size or b) teacher

hi. trying to choose between two chem teachers.

1st choice: [url=<a href=“http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=212880]JoeCasalnuovo”>http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=212880]JoeCasalnuovo - California State Polytechnic University - RateMyProfessors.com/url

2nd choice: [url=<a href=“http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=1094950]JenniferTerrazas”>http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ShowRatings.jsp?tid=1094950]JenniferTerrazas - California State Polytechnic University - RateMyProfessors.com/url

1st teacher has smaller class, but from comments he grades all or nothing (no partial credit)
2nd teacher seems to be nicer.

Professor quality over size. Although 98 is a rather big class. What CHM class is it?

^

I know it may seem impersonal to have a class that big, but it is better than sitting in a classroom with 500 other students at a UC. I’d personally just pick the best professor because it just makes sense to learn more and have someone nice teaching you.

its CHM-121. theres also 1 more open seat available for Jody Selco (48 size), but i think im just gona stick with terrazas

the textbook for this course is pretty expensive at over $100 on amazon and even more on Bronco Student Center. is it ok if I buy an older edition of the text? I think only the order the chapters are presented in change.

CalDud… you are absolutely spot on. 98 might seem like a big class to me as there are 20 students per classroom in upper division classes at Cal Poly Pomona, but I forget that UCs are auditoriums with hundreds of students jammed packed and TAs lecturing. I have never had a TA… ever. XD

So, yeah, the class with 98 people should be fine for an intro class. CHM 121 is intro chemistry. Do you have to take the series? I took the Organic Chemistry series and was fine using the old edition because homework was optional. PRO TIP: Optional homework does not mean not to do it, it means study your butt-off because the tests will weight more on your final grade.

@reyrey389: A lot of people manage to find such books online for free somehow. When I took General Chem II nothing had changed really, just the homework problems were shifted over a bit. So, I’d shoot your professor an e-mail, but I think that it should be okay. Just look up reviews on Amazon and see if anyone commented about it being different or not. I think you can also rent your books for cheaper online. Shop around.

also, is it a problem if the solution manual is an older edition than the text? text-4th/6th edition sm-2nd/3rd
