The way my schedule works, I have to go to a discussion class on the first day before the lecture class actually starts. Is this something we would go to or not?

Email the professor and ask about it.

I have this problem too. I think it’s best to attend it to get an idea of what you’re going to study in that year.

it probably varies between schools but every class i’ve taken here has had discussions start in the second week. there is usually nothing to discuss during first week of discussions since the lecture is just syllabi and class policy and stuff.
if i had a discussion before my first lecture i wouldn’t go. what would you even talk about? the professor has all of the syllabi and everything.

Typically labs and discussions don’t start until at least after the 1st lecture. Someone will always ask the prof on the first day.

Sometimes there is no discussion at all, in which case you will be emailed. If there is, usually whoever leads the discussion (usually a TA) will want to get to know you and tell you a little bit about what’s going to happen in discussion each week. It’s best to go at least the first day until you can feel out whether you need to go or not.

Good chance that it won’t be held. Your professor or TA should contact you ahead of time to let you know.

For us, recitations and labs don’t start until the 2nd or 3rd week of class. They don’t usually have the TA’s finalized until then.

Go to class and see. But my labs didn’t start until a couple of weeks into the semester… At the same time, I had my first biology lecture the first day. I was shocked. It was like 15 minutes of introduction/syllabus stuff and then he was like “chapter one: cells and life; and you guys might want to take notes for this since it will be on the quiz that we are having the class after the next.” so it really depends.

it all depends on the class

first day of class and already trying not to attend? lol

Why wouldn’t you go? You don’t even know what it’ll be like.

because they might not have them. as people have said earlier in the thread, a lot of schools/classes don’t have discussions until week 2 because there is nothing to discuss.

At my college, if you don’t attend the first meeting of anything, you get dropped.
ALWAYS go to the first meeting, even if you think it’s going to be pointless.
