Is there a typical time (e.g. in July, in June?) during the summer before a student starts college when the admitted students go to campus for freshman orienation, class registration, etc.? Do most schools have several options on dates?

My son has the opportunity to do something special in late June of '09, but I assume we won't know when he's supposed to show up on campus for registration/orientation until he's been admitted and chosen his school....unless "everyone" typically does their registration/orientation at about the same time.

It varies, a lot. Some schools do it right before classes start, some do it over an entire month in the summer (you pick a weekend and go), etc.

He could look up the schools he is interested in and check to see if it is mandatory to go and when it is.

Definitely check with each school he's applying to. You can find the info on their websites (you might have to do a little searching to find it). We are going to Europe for 2 weeks, and planned our trip later than we would have otherwise gone, in order for S to go to orientation as early as possible. The earlier they go, the better chance they have of getting the classes they want.

If it's an early orientation (the families go in the summer, often kids register for classes and then there are all sorts of information sessions) all the ones I've seen are optional. There is ALWAYS another way for them to register for classes - usually online with the help of a telephone advisor. (Just picture the international students, kids with jobs, kids overseas, etc.)

If there are several different dates (and there often is) they will prorate the class availability so all the kids have the same "chance" of getting in their classes.

We've enjoyed the early orientations, but I wouldn't let it deter your child from doing something really special. Freshmen orientation (last minute schedule tweaking and social stuff) is generally the first few days before their classes start. That they do not want to misS!
