When should I be applying to grad school? I keep hearing that the earlier, the better - especially with rolling admissions and for financial aid. Is it better to wait to submit transcripts with the fall term on them or to just apply now and send them? I'm applying to a grad program not in my major area of study so I don't need a set number of courses in my major and I don't need to calculate my major GPA.

Earlier is better. I am hoping to have everything in by November 1st. Remember to ask profs for letters of rec ASAP.

At most schools there are deadlines for getting your materials in to the department and the graduate school. Many departments will not begin to review applications until after that deadline passes so there may not be a great need to rush. If your program has rolling admissions that is a different situation.

The vast majority of grad schools do NOT use rolling admissions... there is a set deadline ranging anywhere from Nov. 1 to Feb. 1 depending on the school or degree program... you're best bet is to look at the websites of all the schools that interest you and make a chart/table of deadlines... and I second elizabeth's point above... ask for letters of rec as early as possible.

I am now working on updating my resume to give to those profs I am asking to write letters of rec. Sometimes they don't know all the things you have done during the summers or ec's, projects with other profs, or work experience. Think about a resume ASAP.
