When do most students take the SAT?

My son is a junior and we're still pretty much learning our way around this whole thing. So do most students take the SAT in the spring of their junior year or wait until fall of senior year? And how long does it take to get results?

Don’t wait until the fall of senior year to take all your SATs. It makes things very rushed. Considering that your son is a junior, he can take the SAT as many times as he wants with the new scoring policy (he can choose what scores he wants the colleges to see on his score report). Your son should get as familiar as he can with the SAT to maximize his score…

I second shiomi. My D is also a junior. D has already registered to take SAT in Dec and plan to take again either in June 09 or Oct 09 next year, depending on the outcome of Dec SAT results. With the new scoring system, it is good to take a few times and still can choose one best score to send to colleges. The results usually come out within about three weeks for online account and about 6 weeks for paper mailing.

I wouldn’t advise leaving anything until senior year – you want to have that sort of thing behind you when the real stress of apps begins, no?

im a junior taking it in dec, prolly retake later in the year again

I would guess May of Junior year and October of senior year are popular dates.

Thanks so much for the quick responses. Very helpful for us rookies.

So, just to make sure I’m understanding this correctly, my son could take the SATs five times, then just pass on the best scores to his colleges, and they’ll have no idea that were four other lesser scores?

^Yep, that’s the general idea.
Lucky 2010+ers…
I’m in the class of 2009 :'(!!

Also, check to see if any of the colleges to which your son is applying require SAT subject tests. That information will be on the admissions section of the schools’ websites.

March, May, and October are very popular dates. June seems to be popular for SAT IIs.

I had no idea about this “pick and choose” which scores to show colleges!! Ugh, I hate my college counselor.

I went with March SAT, May SAT II, just in case I wanted to re-take anything. I am so glad I didn’t leave anything for this fall, as I have been very busy with school and college apps.

The new rule starts with the March 2009 test.

So it sounds like he should wait to take the test in March. Right?

Dec is good for a warmup SAT, January is kinda a bad time to take tests b/c of midterms, March and May is good to get ur final scores. June is great for SAT II’s b/c subjects are still fresh in ur head. October and November SAT’s as a senior is when u don’t like ur scores and you want to make EA/ED. December and maybe January SAT’s are for the same reason but you want to make the RD deadline.

I just found the link:

[Score Choice](Send SAT Scores to Colleges - SAT Suite | College Board)

Thanks again for pointing me in this direction

My D, who is now a senior, took the SAT I in December and June of her junior year. She took SAT II tests in May of sophomore year, May of junior year and October of her senior year. She’s applying to four schools EA due November 1st so she is hoping her October SAT II’s will come out good since there’s no time to try to do better before the deadline. I’m glad she took the December test her junior year since she ended up with a schedule conflict with one of her EC’s for the March test. Good luck!

November of my junior year and neva went backkkkkk

How do you think schools will now superscore, if at all due to the new “score choice” option? Will colleges only look at the best sitting? Has anyone read anything or heard anything about this?
