Hello! My son will be an entering freshman this fall at CU. He is coming from Los Angeles so he does not own a winter jacket! Does anyone know of a good place to buy a winter jacket that will be good for Boulder? Online or in stores? Any name brand that you would recommend? Also, what month is there enough snow to snowboard? He has a snowboard but we are thinking maybe we will not bring that with us initially and ship it to him later on...Thanks for your help.

I would recommend a good quality medium weight “polar fleece” jacket for warmth, and also a protective shell for windy/wet days. The shell can be layered over the fleece for extra protection. What does he wear snowboarding? There are lots of sporting goods and specialty stores locally. Patagonia, Marmot, REI, Columbia are all brands that have worked for us.

The Front Range generally has fine weather through October. Evenings and mornings can be chilly though. November can bring wicked winds, especially near the foothills, and cooler daytime temps. A couple ski resorts open a few runs in October but the season doesn’t really get going until after Thanksgiving.
