When in doubt...

Hey everyone,

College Apps start in two days! Stanford has been my dream school for the past two years alas I am certain my stats and extras don't match up the general caliber of a Stanford student.

My question is:

I'm almost 99% sure I WILL get rejected...Does it still make sense to apply? Even for that 1%?

yes

@narmanc. The vast majority of the applicants to Stanford will feel just like you do…all you can do is work on the things that matter…the essays, the seven short questions, and get the best possible recommendations…

…the admissions process is a strange thing…one can never really predict (here on CC) why the valedictorian or the perfect 2400 were rejected…while the “not-so-perfect” applicant got accepted…because we are not privy to the ENTIRE APPLICATION FILE…it may be as simple as them needing a few more English or French literature majors over “another” CS/engineering major…

…remember…CONTRARY to popular belief…they are not only looking for future tech founders/entrepreneurs or Olympic level athletes…they will be trying to create a CLASS of artists, musicians, engineers, writers, actors, CS whizzes, social change agents, future government leaders, future lawyers, future doctors, future theologians, future academics/professors, future think-tank leaders, etc…

…so, yes! Good luck!

Yes! Do it!
I found a list of colleges to which I was planning on applying about a month back. I’d crossed Stanford off. I really, really thought I just wasn’t going to get in. I figured I had the stats, but not perfect stats, and I’d done cool things, but I hadn’t done anything world changing in my spare time. My dad convinced me to apply anyway.
Since I’m going to be a Stanford student next year, I try to thank my dad for this as much as possible.

Woah, @Bingo77‌ you mean you were accepted? That is so cool! Huge congrats to you and of course, your dad

@narmanc I am! And thank you :)

Wow! That is super awesome! I think I will definitely apply now

Same to @Bingo77 I also convinced my son that apply and he did it at the last moment for the RD. He has really good stats and was on the top 2% of his school, but he was a little reluctant to apply due to the low % of admits. He finally did it and got accepted and he is going to Stanford for the fall quarter.Good luck @narmanc !

All this alright because you guys have such great stats! Of course your are bound to be accepted (well at least more than others!!)I

asked the question as someone with mediocre stats…
