When is everyone starting their essay(s) and application(s)?

I’m pretty nervous. I still have a ton of schools to visit, and I want to apply ED. Basically, I’d like to know what all of you guys are doing in preparation (mainly people applying ED). Thanks.

I would have started mine today, but the common app isn't online yet. Tomorrow.

I applied RD, and started my stuff during Thanksgiving break. Actually, all I did before Thanksgiving break was give my teachers the recommedation forms. Everything else I started a couple weeks before it was due. However, I did do college visits and some interviews over the summer, and I didn't have a whole lot else to do during the school year. I'm sure other CC people will think I'm crazy, but I really think it is a bit early, even for ED.

Cynthia, even essays?

Yes. I do better on things when I do them pretty much all at once. Then I reread and edited the essays a few days later. I work best under pressure, and I'm a born procrastinator. Most people would probably need to start earlier, as I said, I wasn't particularly busy. My high school was not challenging. Still, I'd think a month would be plenty.

Cynthia, where did you end up going?

I'll be at Amherst. I found the financial aid applications to be more trouble than the admissions application, actually, and I'd recommend putting some of this summer to use with scholarship applications. Even if you aren't going to need financial aid, extra money can't hurt.

I'm starting now. Ill be done by summer and i can focus on ENJOYING senior year. yes, slacking. is that a forbidden word in this forum?

Nope - it's welcome. Bring on Sr Year.

I haven't officially "started" yet. I looked at old copies of the applications at places i'm interested in to see what the essays were (they are often the same year to year) and have been jotting down ideas as they pop into my head on this little notepad by my computer. By the time I actually sit down to write them, I will have several pages of ideas to choose from.

When do the essays come out. How many do you have to write for each school. Ugh, I'm so oblivious.

yeah i would like to know that as well. when is essays coming out?

Does someone have a link for the 2005-2006 common application?

I don't think it has been posted online, but i have the one Harvard sent me. The essay choices are:

Choose one, and write 250-500 words.

Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you.

Discuss some issue of personal, local, national, or international concern and its importance to you.

Indicate a person who has had a significant influence on you, and describe that influence.

Describe a character in fiction, an historical figure, or a creative work (as in art, music, science, etc) that has had an influence on you, and explain that influence.

A range of academic interests, personal perspectives, and life experiences adds much to the educational mix. Given your personal background, describe an experience that illustrates what you would bring to the diversity in a college community, or an encounter that demonstrated the importance of diversity to you.

Topic of your choice.

I'll be starting some of them in October. Yes, because that's when UC online apps are released. >:O

But otherwise I'm going to focus on what I'm doing at NASA SHARP so that I can write a nice essay when I'm done.

frozen-tears, have a little diary where you can jot down things you've learnt, felt and experienced during the program, especially the little things. helps kepp the essays personal!:) i found out during my own essay writing experience that often I could remember the bigger picture of the things I did, but the finer points often escaped recollection.
