When Is It College Time???

What year do you think it would be appropriate for students to start looking intensively into colleges and universities? I mean, visiting campuses, contacting coaches (for athletes), beginning resumes, etc.

I would say the end of sophomore year would be a good start.

How bout you all? What do you think?

Thanks

Eh, you’re a little early. I’d say August of your Senior year.

At the end of Junior Year. I didn’t know what colleges I seriously wanted to go to until the beginning of Senior year, but I believe that if you think you might do early decision, then at the end of Junior Year you should be fine. At our school we meet with our college advisor in the middle of our last Junior year semester and he gives us a list of privates/state schools/city schools we should consider. Then throughout the summer we narrow them down to a smaller list and at the beginning of senior year we talk to our college advisor again about our list and make sure that there are good safteys, matches, and a few reaches.

No, you’re a little late. You should have started in kindergarten.

Start at the very end of your junior year.

beginning of junior year I would say…gotta at least start thinking what you wanna do

Oh, hang on a second. You have to start AP testing in soph, and do all your SATs in junior. Standard stuff/exams. But actual colleges…end of junior year.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Don’t visit schools until after you’re accepted to them. We wasted a lot of money on plane tickets flying to schools that I ended up getting rejected from.

Spring Break of Junior Year.

Beginning of junior year.

You should visit colleges during your late junior year/early senior year to decide where you want to apply. Therefore, you should start searching early junior year.

Beginning resume: beginning of 9th

Thinking of potential colleges: spring break of soph (do something cool over the summer)

Researching and visiting colleges: Spring break of soph though spring break senior

Making a list of colleges to apply to: Spring Break Junior

Start preparing for college now.
You can look at colleges in your Junior year, but make sure you keep your grades and extracurriculars up throughout highshcool.

Doing the actual visits? One short-go Junior year then the real trip Seniors year to pre-frosh weekends and the like.

When I was in 7th grade, I found my (current) dream school…

but I’m looking at more schools now (9th)

Second semester junior year. By the end of it, it’s good to have a pretty firm college list, to have visited about half of your schools, to have figured out from whom you’ll get recs, to have a resum

Begin actually looking at colleges some time during your junior year.

I’m going to politely disagree with some people here and say “the earlier the better”.

I realize that it sounds crazy, but I’ve been seriously looking at colleges since 6th grade. I’m currently a senior in high school, but judging by my join date on CC, you can tell that I’ve been here since 8th grade (and I lurked here for a year or two before that). I was told countless times by older people to “not worry about college until junior/senior year”. In retrospect, however, that statement is not completely valid. As long as you can set reasonable goals for yourself and not get distracted from your schoolwork, I do not see any problem in scoping out possible college choices for the future. Just realize that your college choices will inevitably change over your high school career. I thought I was going to apply to 12+ colleges when I was a freshman. Hah, no way.

I would say to focus on your academics/ECs/ essays. It does cost a lot to visit colleges and ditto to the earlier the better. Start your essays early and SAT prep. I say that college visits aren’t that important because you might as well spend your time doing useful things instead of looking at colleges that you might not be able to go to if you don’t have the SATs or GPA>

This. I started at the end of sophomore year, and I could easily have done it all this summer.

On the other hand, I wish I had started thinking about careers a long time ago.
