Hi everyone. I have a question concerning Cornell visits. Since its already May, and the time has come to plan out the summer. Now, im already doing a volunteer position and an internship, but its that time when my dream school....CORNELL of course....deserves a little visit from me.

What do you prospective and current Cornellians say would be the best time to visit? How can i make the most out of my visit? Is the Red Carpet society good and would you recommend it?

I visited in November of my junior year and April of my senior year (even though I was accepted ED in December) and had a slightly different experience at each. Are you considering ED? If so, I would recommend visiting in August or September. Classes start around August 25th.

I am 150% doing ED! :)

So its recommended when students are in session? Because I have the whole summer....wouldn't it be nice in the summer..?

Summer would be nice, but you wouldn't get a feel for the student body. Check when tours are run. I stayed for 3 days with a friend who was a freshman at the time, and he took me to some of his classes and through his typical day. In addition, I took the guided tours and visited the information sessions (both university- and college-run). And I have a couple of cousins at Cornell so I got some of their point of view, too. It was a very realistic and in-depth look at Cornell life and I recommend that sort of visit if you can manage it.

Which college are you applying to?

I havent decided yet between CAS, CALS, or ILR, because of the level of competition. I have to decide based on my intended major which is in the sciences. Obviously ILR wont be that, but most likely CALS.

I'd visit during the Harvard hockey game or something to get a real feel of the students.

It seems that you guys dont advise visiting in July or late June, or August. Cus thats when i wanted to go.

Well, you'll get a nice perspective on the campus and the area, but the weather isn't usually like that, and there wont be students to visit with.

There wont be students to visit with during the summer?

not really, there are some, but you'll get a real sense of what the campus is like if you visit in the fall after classes start (late august) I coincidently visited the day the summer program started so there were mad people and it felt alive but I would have rather visited when the real school was happening.

Im confused. So I shouldnt go during the summer?

Are the campus tours they give good? Cus the Cornell website has April--November ...but Thanksgiving, there are no tours....so I dunno how i can do it in November. It would be nice over the summer. Is it that bad over the summer??? What will i miss out on?

OK...umm...ok, let me figure this out. You guys suggest me not to visit during the summer. OK, obviously i need to visit before November 1st, which is the ED deadline. It all depends when i can stay overnight. Is the Red Carpet Society a good program? Because the SAT, which im taking in October, will be done after October 8. After that, i have Thursday, October 13. But the RCS only works Sunday-Thursday. Where the hell will I go friday, Saturday, and sunday, if I want to stay a couple of days. This really sucks. Im going to have to miss some school days. Thats not good considering Im taking 3 challenging APs next year. Ummm......ok........wait, is there any other way to stay instead of RCS?

I don't know about other overnight stay programs (unless you want to stay in a hotel room), but I can tell you from my experience that it is DEFINITELY worth it to miss some of your school to go visit while Cornell is in session. That way, you get a good feel for what Cornell will be like when you're actually there - the students, classes, sports, campus (this means not just the buildings, but the people ON campus too), weather, etc.

I never did an overnight stay, just visited in my spring break jr. year + Cornell Days senior year, but I think it's a great way to meet some of the students and get an inside view of Cornell, where you might be standing in a year. (It's a lot different looking from the outside vs. looking from the inside.)

why do you need to visit before you apply? unless you think it will help you or something. you shouldn't visit in the summer because hardly anyone will be there and you won't know how the campus feels when the student body is there. i went to an open house the first week in october, also what about late august when the students come back?

Everyone visits schools before they actually apply. I dont want to go when students and freshman r just getting oriented themselves, lol. Umm...im thinking in October, but y do you say that i shouldnt visit BEFORE i apply?

i didn't say you shouldn't, i just said you don't have to, it's not like there's a spot on the application that asks you if you visited or not. and if you know you want to apply then why not just apply and if you get in, go to cornell days? that's all i'm saying

Oh...so ur just saying its not necessary to go. Well...thats kind of true, but it would be nice to see what im applying to and giving everything i have to..........some ppl here said the opposite of wat u said...that its important to visit...cornell even recommends it themselves.

whatever floats your boat

I wouldn't apply ED without visiting, but there's nothing wrong with applying RD and then visiting after being accepted. It's up to you, though.
