I just wanted to thank everyone for their ideas and share an update on dd’s current thoughts. The past several days she has been exploring the idea of living in a French house on a campus while majoring in linguistics or Russian. Well, her searching mostly that lead to schools we can’t afford. But, someone suggested looking at the University of Ottawa. There is an international fee waiver for students who study in French.

Since she is only a sophomore, she has time to focus on getting her writing/reading in French to that level if she restructures some of her course choices. (We might opt for a history course from a French textbook, for example, and have her complete all her assignments in French.)

I actually really like this idea. She gains fluency in both Russian and French.

We need to contact the university to make sure were are clearly understanding the waiver, but for now, dd is excited by the possibility.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek I also know that McGill University will waive the International fee if your daughter enrolls in a French program (a French minor, basically, as I understand it). That would make her annual tuition around $8,343. Since it’s in Montreal, she would get plenty of hands-on French experience out and about in the city as well. McGill’s linguistics department is ranked 28th in the world by the QS rankings. Something to think about.
Thank you @qwerty568 I will have her go back and read McGill’s website more carefully plus make a phone call. After reading Ottawa’s site, she thought that McGill required you to major in French. I’m not sure why she thought that. I’ll try to spend some time digging around the site as well. She was really interested in McGill when this entire conversation started.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek you mentioned going overseas for school. College is free in Germany even for internationals. Maybe she should add German and study there. The $10,000 could pay for housing while there.
