When should I start applying to schools?/ Chance Thread

Summer has just begun and I am eager to start applying to architecture and design school, but I am not sure when to start. I want to be finished with my applications as soon as possible, and I know that starting during the summer would give me a head-start.

So my question to anyone who has been through the entire process of applying to architecture and design school is when did you start and how exactly did you organize yourself so that you could finish your applications/Portfolio on time?

Also, would you mind chancing me?

Background:
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: African American
GPA: 3.2, I know its very low, but I took a rigorous course load, 9 AP/6 honors classes by the time I graduate.
Rank: 103/~520, top 20%, I know still very low
SAT: 1720, I will be re-taking hopping for an 1800
EC: Art Honor Society President (2 Years)
Chess Club Treasurer (4 Years)
2 week intro to architecture summer program at Texas Tech

Current Portfolio: http://www.flickr.com/photos/grantl345/4669003591/in/set-72157624203080786/ It is nowhere near being done, these are just a few works that I have done at the moment, I am working on more drawings from life and still life's at the moment.

Schools that I am interested in:

1.Carnegie Mellon (Industrial Design)* Would LOVE to go here, ED?
2. Cornell University (Architecture)
3.Syracuse University (Architecture)
4. UT Austin --in state--(Architecture)
5. Rice University (Architecture)
6. Virgina Tech (Probably Architecture, but maybe industrial design)
7. Tulane University (Architecture)
8. Arizona State (Industrial design)
9. University of Houston (Industrial design)
10. USC (Architecture)

Thanks for any insight, thanks.

Well, being an URM will help, but I don’t think enough to get into CMU, Cornell, Rice, or USC. I don’t know enough about Syracuse, UT or VT to say, and Tulane seems pretty iffy also. Certainly the higher you can get your SAT’s the better, especially if you can get to 1850+. I don’t think you will have any trouble with ASU or UH.

As far as when to start applying, the sooner the better, but if you are not taking the SAT’s until October, then you might want to wait until you see those scores.

Good luck!

Thanks, what about my EC’s and my portfolio?

Your EC’s could use some filling out. Did you do any volunteer work? Sports? Something other than school clubs would be good. As far as portfolio, I am not qualified to comment on that, but it looks pretty good to me. But I cannot draw at all. I don’t think Tulane actually requires a portfolio, but I could be totally wrong on that. I do know that you don’t apply separately to the Architecture school there, you just get accepted to Tulane and choose architecture as a major. Probably if you don’t really have what it takes they gently coax you out of it, but I will assume you are good. It sounds like you have a passion for it, and that really helps. Make sure that comes across to the schools.

I’m African, had the same gpa, and got into cuse’, pratt, and NJIT. I’d say I had a solid portfolio, but my essay was also really good. As for your portfolio, it’s alright. I noticed you have a lot of sketchbook drawings, and while those are excellent to include when you have quick gesture drawings and such, schools like to see that you’re advanced and can produce great work on a larger scale. I’d say get an 11 x 14 sketchbook and start drawing objects and architecture. Also, sometimes it’s nice to include unfinished drawings – it shows technical approach and style. Your SAT scores drag you down, I’d say high 1800’s (push for 1900’s) would get you into a decent number of schools up there. But as for my chancing based on my personal experience:

1.Carnegie Mellon - Reach
2. Cornell University - Reach
3.Syracuse University - Match (Provided you do what I say and include a solid essay)
4. UT Austin : Don’t know
5. Rice University : Don’t know - very selective program however.
6. Virgina Tech : Reach
7. Tulane University : Don’t know
8. Arizona State : Match?
9. University of Houston : Match
10. USC : Reach

Here’s my portfolio if you wish to look at it:

Good luck!! :)

Hi, I’m also really interested in architecture.
And my situation is really similar with Grantl345.
And I really love chess too, I’m in chess club from freshman year.
my accumulative GPA so far is 3.31. 2030 for SAT.
Took 5 APs, 1 IB, and 6 Honors.
My school don’t rank.
I went to Carnegie Mellon University for the architecture summer program.
The TAs there got into CMU with an SAT of 1990 and GPA of 3.9.
But he told me that they also look into the portfolio a lot and your passion in architecture.
And I think you have a better chance in UT Austin because you’re an in-state student.
I’m an international student, so it’ll be kinda hard for me to get into UT Austin.
But I really wanna go there because they’re really good in architecture and it’s cheaper compared to other schools.
They’re also really good in Football and Basketball (messed up last season).
I love playing basketball (guard, I’m an Asian) and watching football ( I don’t play though, too dangerous).

And for the portfolio, do you guys think it’d be OK if my works are mostly by pencil?
Or do I need to add in some colored stuff too?
And how many piece should I include in the portfolio?
And chance me too, I’m applying to:
Penn-State
Syracuse
UT Austin
Rice
Carnegie Mellon

I’m applying to the dual program in architecture in UT Austin.
It says that it’s more rigorous in the UT website, does that mean it’s harder to get into compared to the architecture program?
And trakwrecka, I looked at your portfolio, it’s really good.
Loved the falling water drawing.
But there’s unfinished work in there though.
So it’s OK for us to put in unfinished work?
And do you recommend putting sketchbook stuff into the portfolio?

Should I include that I love rapping and performed on stage a couple of times before?
Or is that inappropriate to be added into the application (the extra curricular part)?
I don’t know. My parents told me that colleges don’t care whether if I’m a good rapper.
They said it’s un-academic and it’s not one of those typical activities that people add in their applications.

More detail info so that you can give me a more accurate chance:
My GPA is not that high: 3.31 (3.5 last semester)
but I took 5 APs, 1 IB, and 6 Honor classes.
SAT: 2030 (retaking during October)
SAT II Math: 780 Physics:660 (retaking it during November)
AP Physics: 4
AP Lang: 3
I’m an international student (Indonesian Chinese), so I guess it’s a lot harder for me to get into UT Austin.
Does legacy affect the admission, because I heard students have a higher chance of getting in if their parents or relatives went there?
I took TOEFL got 108/120.
Play basketball.
Chess Club leader.
Finished 8th grade in piano (freshman year)
Helped people building houses in Nepal.
Got gold medal in Fermat canadian math contest
won a couple of intramural chess competition.
And does going to summer programs in architecture increase my chance?

Kendezi… just make a new thread

How do I start a new thread?

its a button on top of each forum section

Thanks Arctic92

it’s going to be very hard to get into Cornell and Rice, especially Cornell.

I would really like to know how your college admissions process went…I’m in exactly the same dilemma now!
