When Should I Tour?

I am a rising senior interested in Northwestern and I'd like to visit as soon as possible, so I can be complacent with my early decision plans. However, it is my understanding that Northwestern starts (and ends) later than most universities. With that said, when do you, current students and anyone else who may know, think the best time to visit is? I would like to see the campus with students there so I get an accurate feel of what it's really like. When do students start to return, and when would this be a good time? I know students come back a little before classes actually begin, so as long as there is a substantial amount of "life" on campus I'm good haha. Are there a lot of students there at mid/early August?

Thanks! :)

Classes don’t start until September 22nd or so, this year, and run through June 5thish Freshmen will be on campus starting Sept 15th or something like that.

There’ll be some students floating around for the summer quarter, and some that have year-long leases doing work or interning around. Not too many, though, and the campus won’t be too lively until freshmen start rolling in.

Freshman will not arrive until mid-September, which will be followed by a week of orientation activities. I would think early October would be a good time, but I am not an expert. My daughter will be a freshman, but she is going site unseen.

So do you think September 14 would be too early? Or would you recommend the 21st instead?

@calimomof4 when is your daughter going? if you happen to know the date, that’d pretty much answer it. :)

The 21st or 28th would be better. The 14th is probably right when, or right before freshmen get to campus. Hardly the typical college weekend.

I’m going to another college first week in October, which is why I was hoping I could put them further apart, but looks like the 21st it is. Thanks :)

My daughter was invited to move in a few days early (Sept. 12th or 13th). The official freshman move in is Sept. 15th.

Freshman move-in: September 16th
Regular move-in: September 20th
Classes start: September 24th

There’s also a home football game on the 21st. I would suggest coming on the 28th if that’s an option.

Flying fish has it down. We (freshman) arrive on the 16th (other than people in early programs, like me. In fact, in my program we move in on the 14th, but that’s just 40 freshman). I didn’t know about the regular move in date, since I’m not a freshman. Classes start the 24th.

I wouldn’t show up before classes actually start, and I probably wouldn’t even show up the first week, since we’ll just be getting used to everything and you could get in our way ;)

Alternatively, you could roll in on the 21st and hit up some of the tailgates before the game. That’s always an option, not that I’d suggest that sort of thing.

Dunno about anyone else, but my friends and I like to show the prospies a good time.

Homecoming Weekend (early October, 5th?) will definitely be fun. Although the campus will be taken over by Ohio State fans. 21st would be good also, everyone will be moving in though. The football game is against Maine, so don’t expect much excitement

Early February.

I mean, if you’re the human torch.
