If a college "recommends" 3 subject tests, but the subject scores are not good compared to the SAT reasoning test, should a student submit the subject scores?
The student's grades are also lower than the SAT reasoning scores.
Opinions, please! Thanks!

Hmmm… How do the grades look in relation to the subject tests?
The subject tests can help if they are higher.

Of course, if you don’t want to send the scores I would think it’s not a terrible sin to not submit them.

You could chock it up to financial difficulty or lack of time or something as to why the “recommended” items weren’t completed.

Of course, the fact that it’s recommended and not simple “considered” mean that they do have grounds to look negatively on the application for their absence (but because it’s not “required” they must still give full consideration to the application).

Personally, I’d think you should send the scores unless they are absolutely atrocious. You could also consider whether there’s enough time to retake the subject tests by the deadline.

Thanks, moodragonx (I like your location!) The SAT superscore is 2200. The GPA is 3.5 unweighted, 4.3 weighted, with mostly Bs in math and one C, mostly As in history and a couple of Bs. The SAT subject tests are 600 math I, 600 math II, and 640 U.S. history. The GC gave advice that all students should take a subject test in math. SAT reasoning test was 710 in math. The ED deadline is November 1, so application will go in imminently. The student will take U.S. history and literature subject tests November 6, but has not studied as she believes keeping up with grades in all AP subjects is more important than studying for these tests. Time is limited by a current sport, although the student will not play varsity in college.

Since there are only two colleges, Northwestern and Johns Hopkins, that do not require but recommend “three” SAT IIs, yes, those are a little low for those but not by much; also you have only two of the three recommended because that recommendation is for three different subject matters and you have two maths which thus count as one and with two new ones you will have only three since you are repeating history. GPA looks OK for both. It is a close call since they do like to see IIs. I would probably send.

Thanks, dursba. Do you really think these are only a little low for JHU? Math score is in the 31% or so.

“Little low” is a fair judgement. 31% is still in the mid-50% and if test scores aren’t being made the main draw of an application, sitting in the mid-50% is fairly safe.

If it was significantly below that it may have been wise to just… pretend like those tests never happened… but that’s not the case and because they recommend these tests it’s probably advantageous to include them.

Thank you!
