Should I wait until the first class day?
Or should i go to the Co-op website and get the book on Half.com since they take a while to get to me?

You should have the books in your hand by the time classes start.

I’m 3/9 on a waitlist… Should I wait until I see if I get the class or should I just buy the textbooks for my classes now to be safe…

Well, unless it’s a small class, I would assume that you’ll get in eventually. What you could do is buy the book from the Co-op, and if you end up not getting into the class, you can return the book before the 12th class day for a full refund. If you do get in, you can still return the book and find a cheaper copy somewhere around campus or online.

What if some classes don’t use textbooks?

I usually wait until the first class day, and I’ve never had any issues. It probably varies between different professors, but you probably won’t need a textbook on the first day of a big lecture class. Also, a lot of professors seem to take into account the fact that people are still adding/dropping on the first week.

That’s true for large classes. For major-specific classes, though, you’ll likely need the book sooner. Some of my chemical engineering professors have assigned reading before the semester starts, too.

Assigned reading before the semester starts? That’s just bad.

It may sound bad, but there’s a reason why our department is up there with MIT, Berkeley, and Stanford.
