When to buy?

For a high school senior thinking ahead, should you buy a laptop with Christmas sales senior year, with model changes in Feb/March/April to get a discount on old ones, right before college in August during back-to-school sales, or some other time?

Colleges talk about student pricing on both computers and software. Are these good discounts or what you would find during a regular sale or even through employee pricing if the parents get it through their workplaces?

You have to be registered to attend before you can get the discounts. Many students can't register until at least May. So if the best time to buy a computer is before then, do you buy the minimum and basically not be able to use it until you get programs with the student discounts?

If the best time to buy is August, do you really have time to get it going and get used to it before the first day or school or is your quest for a better price detrimental at this point?

I think that it would be best to wait until the Summer for two reasons: a newer model may be out by then, so you will have the latest laptop going into school; many laptop manufacturers run ‘back-to-school’ sales in the Summer.

yup summer.

 • new models
 • back to school sales
 • educational discount from most companies like Apple, Dell, HP, etc
 • you need a student ID to get these discounts so naturally you need to wait after May
 • unless you’re really technologically impaired like a grandma, you’ll be fine with a new lappy ;D
