When to Retake?

I’m a Junior and recently signed up to take my first SAT in January. I also signed up for three SAT 2s in June. I used two fee waivers and the college counselor at my school said I would not be able to ask for anymore this year. I don’t want to end up doing any last chance testing and want to keep at least 2 dates open for retakes for the SAT and subject tests. Would it be beneficial to argue for more fee waivers this year so I can retake the SAT in May instead of August or would it be better to study during the Summer and retake in August/October? I’m worried I’ll sound selfish and self-absorbed.

Also, the college counselor said I wouldn’t be able to ask for any ACT fee waivers Junior year, but that means no retakes until September. She said it’s because our school district pays for every Junior to take the ACT in April.

I feel boxed into a tight spot and don’t have the money to pay for any tests without fee waivers. Should I tell her I plan on applying for Questbridge or EA/ED? These rules would be fine if I had until December to retest, but I won’t.

My daughter was told the same thing about fee waivers but you should contact the CollegeBoard for clarification because the way it is stated on their site it appears that you are allowed two waivers for the SAT and another two for SAT Subject Tests. I think there is confusion among counselors about this. My daughter only needed to take each test once so I did not worry about it but I believe you are allowed 2 of each.

@Orlando58 Thanks. I talked with the college counselor and she knows we are allowed to get 4 waivers, but said the school has a limited amount and that some students blow through their waivers by doing poorly on the SAT their Junior year instead of waiting to retake.

I know I wouldn’t do poorly and scored around 1450 on practice tests w/out exclusive prep(I plan to do most of my prepping during Winter break).I know when she’s talking about kids bombing she means scoring <1000 or going AWOL on test day. What do I do now? :-/

It is your right to use all 4 fee waivers and not really the choice of the school. My daughters school told her they were out of fee waivers the first time she went to get one. I called the CollegeBoard and they told me the school could have easily ordered more but they also told me that i could get them from another high school in my area if the school had extras. So I called another local high school and made arrangements to pick up a fee waiver from them but they needed to call my daughter’s school to confirm that she qualified for it. After the other school called it seems as if my daughter’s school got embarrassed that i was gonna get the fee waiver somewhere else so they immediately ordered more. You just need to be persistent and understand that your school is not paying for the fee waiver and you have a right to use all four. You only have one chance to go to college so ther is no need to mess it up.

@Orlando58 Thank you so much. I thought each school was limited in waivers, but I’ll be more persistent about getting a few more.
