When to start drafting essays?

When would be the optimal time to start drafting essays? I haven't started at all yet, and haven't even thought about possible topics I could write about, so I'm starting to wonder if I'll have enough time to crank out exceptional essays.

I know summer is usually suggested as the best time, but would late July be too late?

You can start whenever you want, but if you’re a slow writer like me, sooner is always better.

Do it now when you have time. Draft possible topic ideas and then take one and run with it. It should be something that goes through multiple revisions. I usually write all my essays in one go through (just how my brain works) and then edit them afterwards. Start early. Don’t be like me who wrote the majority of his essay and supplements over winter break… july is fine, start thinking about it as soon as possible though, you have the essay topics already.

Most students spend MORE time doing test prep than they do writing their college essays – and, IMHO, it should be the other way around. Start working on your essays ASAP.

FWIW: Both my kids spent about four months writing, editing, re-writing and polishing their college essays. And they just didn’t write on one topic, each wrote a polished essay on about 5 or 6 different topics and it was only after having that many choices that they were able to decide what story they most wanted to tell an Admissions Director.

Start NOW!

July, which is almost here, is a fine time to start your essay. Just consider that if you want others to review your essay once you have a draft you are comfortable with, you need to allow time for that. My D’s counselor wants to review the rising seniors essays and she gave them a July deadline to submit their draft if they wanted to take advantage of her review.
