When to take the SAT?

About a month prior to the PSAT, I took a SAT Preparation course that was driven towards SAT/PSAT students. I wanted to score well on the PSAT my sophomore year, so I took it.

Is it a good idea for me to take the SAT next January. I haven't received my score back yet for the PSAT, but my Freshman PSAT was a 191.

Also, how well are schools following "Score Choice," so if I don't do well on it, will colleges see it?

Some schools I am interested in:
UPenn
MIT
Yale
Caltech

Take it late in your junior year, either in March of June (reserve May for Subject Tests). If you are not happy with your score, you can always take it Oct, Nov, and Dec of your senior year.

Of those above, I know that Yale does not follow Score Choice, but only send your best score anyway. A college’s lack of recognition of Score Choice is a very anal policy in my opinion especially when ACT people are not held to the same sending standards.

Hmmm. Is it not a good idea to take it now, since all the material is fresh in my mind. I’ll also have time to do the blue book tests again. I also was a able to get the SAT Online Course tests/answers.

Yale does not follow it? I was under the impression all do. Harvard follows it!
So, Yale lets you choose your best ACT score, but not SAT.

Also, what would be your guys opinion, what would be the best ACT score to get into these colleges. I’ve got a good idea that a 2300+ is essential on the SAT, but have no idea where to go for the ACT.

I second taking it in your junior year… There isn’t a big difference between juniors and seniors, but there is between sophomores and juniors IMO. Juniors score much higher, even without studying.

I took my first SAT in Jan of my Junior year, then again in June, and then again in October. Over that course of a year, I improved 200 points.

Just make sure you study (which I assume you will since you seem motivated). I didn’t at all for the first two times, and that’s probably why I had a huge jump. So if you work hard from the beginning, you’ll probably hit your level mark and you won’t even need to take it thrice.

Usually, a minimum of 34 is best to seem competitive if you only send the ACT alone. Also, if your ACT and SAT scores dovetail in range, I would suggest definitely sending in the SAT since it is viewed with much more respect than the ACT. Exclusively taking the ACT places you at a disadvantage IMO.

I say prep more for it and take it later. If 191 is any indication of your current SAT score, then it would definitely not be wise to take it now, especially if you are applying to those elite universities.
