I hear Yale may be oversubscribed, and that there may be virtually nobody taken from the WL.

That's saddening to hear, although chances are going to be slim regardless.

so Byerly, what are we talking about numbers-wise?

Yale underaccepted in order to take a few waitlisters...

I wouldn't say they "underaccepted." They shifted, in the admit group, to take 710 SCEA vs. 674 last year, meaning that a higher fraction of the class came from the high-yield early pool. It would thus be expected that the overall yield rate would rise, all other things being equal.

I've read that Yale purposely accepted fewer class of '09 students than they have previously with the expectations that they'd have a higher yield this year. I don't know why, exactly, but rumors allude to the Summer upset possibly being a reason. However, different accepted students have heard from adcoms that they intend to use the waitlist this year, and moreso than in past years.

But this is all speculation. And if there's one thing I've found in this whole process, it's that speculation is purposeless. Good luck to all, and to all a good night.

Well, consider this: the 1,880 admitted initially this year was pretty much the functional equivalent to the 1,950 admitted initially last year. Why? Because, of the initial admits, an additional 36 came from the high-yield early pool as compared to last year. To fill the same number of slots, approximately 70 would have had to be admitted from the RD pool, (as last year) which has a lower yield rate.

I'd say the number of waitlist admits will be small if any, since Yale built this greater use of the early pool into its 2009 yield projections.

Byerly, another question for you is this: can you find out a general date of when they'll start informing kids? Someone mentioned May 20, but Yale themselves said "mid-June" at the latest, which is highly vague.

That's because this is, indeed, a vague process.

You start out with X number of people having agreed, by May 1, to matriculate.

Then you have to wait a couple of weeks to see if any of them jump ship after being taken off the waitlist elsewhere.

Then you check to see what "holes" exist in the class after 1/3 of the admits (in Yale's case) turned you down.

Then you look to the WL to fill those holes.

have people been updating yale on awards and stuff?

I know 2 kids who already were offered places in the class off the wait list.

"I know 2 kids who already were offered places in the class off the wait list."

Check your information again. My GC called on behalf of a waitlisted friend and Yale says they have yet to make any waitlist decisions/offers.

I think the 72% admit rate and OVERattendance of about 30 kids dooms us all to oblivion.

Where are all the waitlisters going now that it appears we're screwed?

I'm going to Brown!!!

Liar liar, pants on fire.

In the "I got off the waitlist" thread in College Admissions forum, a poster said that he/she got off the waitlist for Yale today...but then I was looking at their older posts, and they said that they had been rejected at Yale...were they lying? Because my GC called Yale recently, and they said that the yield was higher than expected this year, and that they wouldn't notify people until early-mid June, and the possibility of waitlist certainly existed, but in the form of admitting students turning down Yale in favor of another school where they got off the waitlist. But somehow I don't think there will be too many of those...Sorry this post is really long and rambling! :)

lol. Yale's target class size is 1310, and 1340 people decided to matriculate. I wonder if theres gonna be any waitlist..... good luck.

I'm pretty sure that there will be no waitlist judging by the numbers. I'll be surprised if anyone gets off.

Bally, unfortunately people lie on CC a whole lot.

Dear Rebecca:

Thank you for choosing to remain on Yale's wait list. I appreciate your patience in awaiting final word on your candidacy.

I am sorry to say that a review of the status of our freshman class indicates that we will not be able to give further consideration to your application. Because of an increase in the number of students choosing to matriculate this year, we are unable to offer admission to any students on the wait list.

I appreciate your interest in Yale (ed.not - I doubt they really appreciated my interest. I'm probably the biggest Yale enthusiast in New Haven. Oh well, their extreme major loss and Michigan's extreme major gain), and wish you the best of luck in your undergraduate years.

Sincerely yours,

Well, Yale, you rejected me and accepted my brother, who rejected you. Even Rory Gilmore rejected you, and that's an awful show. I think we know who's the biggest loser.
