When you read a book and don't know a word, do you look it up?

It would take me months to finish some books if I did this. Who does it?

not me... i just figure it out from the context......idk i guess my verbal score wud be a lot higher if i did tho

i definitely don't do that. i just try to figure out the meaning from context, and hope i see that word elsewhere.

I sometimes do. If I can figure out what the word is based on what context it's in, then usually not unless I'm really curious (ie. It's an unusual word). Also depends on how easily I can access a dictionary (whether I'm at home where I can easily grab the dictionary/go on the internet, or on the bus).

Actually, I do most of the time, just type it into dictionary.com

So do you always read in front of a computer? Just curious.

I have a pocket dictionary with me when I'm reading (yes, i know, it is the "cool thing to do")

Sometimes I do; if I'm near the computer (dictionary.com, like someone else said) and I don't understand the word in context. Authors tend to repeat the same words throughout their novels, too, so looking it up once and then seeing it a few more times helps to understand it permanently.

I have an electronic dictionary and its very useful for reading because it only takes a second to type in the word; it's very convenient because I don't even have to put down the book.

I'm not always in front of it, but my laptops always on, I can just go to it and type it in quickly, if for some reason I can't, I'll forget about it and keep reading.

never 10 char.

Most of the time, unless it's easy to derive the meaning from the context, or if I have to get up and walk to get a dictionary. Generally, I have to see a new word used about 2-4 times before it gets established in my memorized vocabulary.

never -- I don't want to interrupt my train of reading

If you don't, you should. Last summer I looked up all the words I didn't know the "exact meaning(s)" of, and it took forever to get through some books. But now, I barely ever come across words I don't know; it it has made my reading experience a lot richer.

I used to, if I came across a word that kept showing up, try to keep it in the back of my head, and then look it up later. More recently, however, I kept a sticky note and a pen next to me when I was reading, and I just took a second to write down the words, and then looked them up later. It worked pretty well.

I never used to. I just read everything in context. More recently though, while preparing for the SATs I decided to write down the difficult words and look them up later on. But I hate having to interrupt myself and now have given up looking them up. I like it better this way.

I always look up words I'm not sure about. I learned cool words like "ablution," "stela(e)," and "didactic" that way. Thus, the verbal section of the SAT was always extremely easy. :)
