When you were taking Calc III, did you feel the need to review Calc I and Calc II?

If you took credit for the AP Calc BC exam, and you skipped to Calc III, did you regret not retaking Calc I and II? I feel like I've forgotten a lot of calc over the summer. Is the review of Calc I and II in Calc III enough?

I’m not really sure you need to review. Taking derivatives in single-var is straightforward enough and partial derivatives are the same way. There aren’t any crazy integrals like in calc 2 either since the focus is more on concepts when you come to multiple integrals. You might want to review substitution though, in case your class does that in multi integrals (mine only did as ec questions). Also, there weren’t any series/sequences in calc 3, so don’t spend time reviewing those.

Change-of-coordinates and trig substitutions might be useful to remember or review. Calc III extends calculus to higher dimensions. You might be working with shapes and surfaces that are better expressed in spherical or cylindrical coordinates than rectangular ones.

My Calc III class briefly touched on multivariate Taylor series too. Series might come up, but you won’t need all of the various convergence tests.

Ditto the previous two comments. Don’t worry about Calc III. It’s not as hard as it’s perceived to be. The main applications in Calc III are vectors, derivatives, and integrals and these aren’t even difficult. I honestly think you’ll be fine.

No. The trickiest part of calc three, to me, was visualizing 3d shapes intersecting in whatever way the equation had them. Idk how you could practice that though

Only once during my Calc III class did a tricky integral come up that required remembering the technique from Calc II. I was lucky enough to pull that one out of my a$$…I mean memory. Most of the class, however, was not as lucky.

I took Calc I, II and III back to back to back (spring, summer, fall) so my memory was probably not as rusty. I know some kids coming off of High School AP Calc BC struggled a bit more.

I took BC my Jr yr of HS and there wasn’t anything I forgot that I needed for Calc 3.

Calc 4 on the other hand… I spent time remembering a couple of concepts

^^Purple, what did Calc 4 cover? At my school Calc III, or multivariable, is the last class in the calc series

Calc 4 is diffy qs.

I tookan honors theoretical version of the class and my chinese prof was dropping trig identities, doing partial fraction decomposition, integrating by parts, etc. like it was completely commonplace. I had to go look up how to do that stuff again.
