So I go to a four-year college, and I have this one professor who is just so... ugh -_-
I had him last semester too, and I just really dislike him. And I made a huge mistake by talking another one of his courses.
My problem with him is assuming things... See, I'm a quiet person, really don't have much to say. Since I'm quiet in his class, he assumes I don't participate because I don't read the material. Not only did he say that this semester, but last semester too. I feel like he grades the students based on personality and not the actual work... I know participation is important, but why is it such a big chunk of the grade? I'm here to LEARN.

He's also kind of insensitive too... Just can't stand him. And I'm not the only one that feels this way, a lot of the students in that and the previous course had so many complaints about him.

Seriously, what is his problem?

Studies show that students who participate in class usually learn more and learn it better.

Attaching a grade to participation encourages you to do more of it.

One student’s behavior affects other people’s behavior. A classroom is an environment, not a collection of individuals.

When more students participate, students who are reluctant to participate will often participate more.

When more students don’t participate, students who are on the fence usually choose not to participate.

There will be exceptions, of course, and maybe you are one of them. For better or worse, policies are designed for the typical student, and they must apply to all students, or they will not be fair.

I can’t tell you why participation is such a big chunk of the grade in YOUR class. You haven’t named the class or its size, what other kind of work is expected, or how much participation counts.

What evidence do you have of this?

it seems jerky and i used to hate it, too, but real world usually calls for outputting what you know not just knowing it. it’s no good if you thought of e=mc2 first. if you did not put it out there and make it known it does not matter. anyone can have knowledge, very few have the courage to share it.
