Where are the best PUBLIC high schools?

"The reason why it's not some other school like TJ High is because they take IB classes."

...There are no other schools like TJ. However great you think your school is, TJ is better.

BLS isn't my school. I was explaining why BLS is ranked #1 for AP classes and not TJ High. Anything you could have read wrong in my post you did read wrong.

generally CT overall has the best education system of the country, but that does not necesarily mean the schools are the "most attractive"

you cant dub something most appealing to colleges, as colleges generally look at what the school is offering and to what level you're taking what is offered.

in dallas we have highland park and dallas magnet for math and science... both rank in the top 15 nationwide. there's also texas academy of math and sciences... but im not really sure how to qualify that school... its state run.

gooo Bronx Science !

In Kentucky, we have duPont Manual and Paul L Dunbar. Dunbar has more Teen Jeopardy champs, but Manual has considerably more National Merit Semifinalists each year. We both matriculate into the top colleges, although Manual's been having a Yale drought. The golden years of duPont Manual were around the early 2000s, but it's still doing well. The problem is that overall as a school, Manual is not a top-tier high school. There are five magnets, and the only magnet that gets great academic national attention is the Math, Science, Technology magnet, which is heavily populated with Asians. As for Dunbar, they have Ivy students too.

do you think attending an 'ordinary' public high school ( don't live in northern va,rockville md,ny etc) hurts when applying to selective colleges? wha tif gpa and sat scores are as good as the ' big leagues'?

We have alot of very good public HS in PA. Even some in the city are quite good. My school specifically is #1 in the region and I believe the best in the state. We get a bad rap probably because of the inner city schools though.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7761678/site/newsweek/

They publish an update every year.

We were very disappointed in the public schools (west of Boston), and didn't want private schools. Fortunately, our work enabled us to move wherever we wanted. We did extensive research on the web, and found that numerous school districts in Monroe County of Western NY were comparable to schools in the pricier regions of NY (such as Westchester & Long Island) without the high cost-of living.

We then narrowed it down to two districts, and, as a family, visited them and easily made the decision.

Our town has 'fallen' on the Newsweek list in the subsequent years. The school isn't perfect. Some teachers are down-right bad. But we have been far happier than our expectations - and delighted with aspects we hadn't even known to consider (ie, integration of sports & music creates a balance)

Our only regret was that we hadn't made the move earlier.

Cass Technical High School, New Trier High School, Walter Payton College Preparatory, Whitney Young Magnet High School.

Styvusent in NYC.

For Illinois, I'd have to say New Trier, IMSA, Evanston Township, Naperville North and Naperville Central, and probably Stevenson too. They're all excellent.

I went to the best public Junior High in CA... but that was 3 years ago. California has some pretty bad schools, just because we're like 3 bil + in debt or something so the state has no $ for education.
Bellvue HS in Bellvue Washington is consistantly ranked top 50 in the US

i live in richmond va, actually west end of henrico county (the burbs) and there the school system is pretty good. schools are very competitive. i have a 3.76 uw, 3.94 w and my rank is like 248/560...NOT EVEN in the top 40%..its insane. it has a notable math and science center. everyone one here basically goes to uva

in contrast, eastern henrico county and especially the city of richmond have waaaay worse schools, extremely mediocre

TJHSST! My nephews both go there...but I can't testify to how to compares with other schools. However, I do think the school sends more to big time Ivys and has a higher SAT average, as stated before, than any other school, but we know how much SATs tell about the students -_-

Plano texas schools have a good rep. plano issues the most ap exams west of the mississippi river lol. plano west has top 8 volleyball team. good orchestras. highly competitive.

Lowell high school in san francisco, I heard it's like one of the top 20 or top 10 public schools in the nation!

my school is ranked #2 of california public schools (im in the east bay, dont care to give out my school name) by some random judging method...its above lowell... but lowell indeed has an excelent reputation.

Jacksonville, Florida has some good high schools

In 2003 , Stanton college preparatory was ranked #1 and Paxon School for Advanced Studies was ranked #3. Both are IB world schools

I can only speak from what i know, but the top schools in NYC are stuy, bronx, tech, cardozo, midwood, and various other ones that specialize in music and the arts, such as laguardia (in no particular order). Btw, many of the smartest kids do not get into stuy or bronx, the admissions test grading policy is completely retarded.

definetly not my school
my school was evacuated today for a bomb threat.
yep , thats like 3rd time in like a week.
wowwwww, my school i guess would classify as WORST PUBLIC HIGHSCHOOL EVER
